şamaxı sözünün etimologiyası bir çox mənbələrdə fərqli-fərqli yozulmaqdadır. mənbələrdə və kitablarda qeyd olunmayan fakta görə qədim zamanlarda şamaxıya suriyanın şam şəhərindən müsafir gəlir, şamaxı yerləşdiyi coğrafi və şəhər qurluşu şam şəhərinə çox bənzəmiş, şirvan şahına demiş ki, bura elə şam şəhərinə qardaş şəhərdir. qardaş sözü ərəbcədə əxi deməkdir, şam əxi . beləliklə şamaxı adlanmağa başlanmış.
