The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 47, Post #3

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 47:10-14

Israel (Jacob {y'acov}) met with Pharaoh last week and was told he could live in the land of Goshen.

Today, we learn that the land he gave them to possess was in the land of Rameses. Goshen probably being one province of sorts in a greater section of land referred to as the land of Rameses Joseph was still in charge of everything, so he provided for them there. What a wonderful end his father will have to his life, knowing that his son is alive and ruling over the empire there.

Without any kind of break in chapter or verse, the story continues with the story of the famine, how people kept coming there to buy food and even so when they had run out of money. Joseph brought all that money to Pharaoh (job security, I assume.)

As I said above, which is a hint of what is to come, Joseph will continue to deal with the people as they give more and more of their possessions in order to continue eating.

Food is the deciding factor still today which is why the farmers (who see the problems to come) are protesting in many countries today. Instead of the Creator causing the scarcity of food and seed, the governments want to replace Him and do the same thing that Pharaoh did through Joseph.

It is odd that many years later, the people of Jacob (Israel) were enslaved by the same line of rulers...

Today's reading

English

And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from the presence of Pharaoh. Then Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. And Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with food, according to the number of their dependents.

Now there was no food in all the land, for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished by reason of the famine. And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain that they bought. And Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.
