The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 34, Post #6

in #hebrew4 months ago

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 34:27-31

We are finishing another chapter today. Chapter thirty four is history!

The topic of today's reading is the wholesale butchering of the people of Shechem. After making a deal with the men of Shechem, the brothers went there after they had all been circumcised and were weak. They killed all the men including the prince who would have married Dinah. Then they took all the valuables, the animals, the women, and the children from the city.

Jacob was very upset because the peoples of the region would likely gather and take on the people of Israel because of their shady dealings with Shechem. The brothers argued with their father with outrage still about what had happened to Dinah.

The chapter abruptly ends there.

Today's reading

English

The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. They took their flocks and their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field. All their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and plundered.

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household." But they said, "Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?"
