The ancient language of ivrit ( עברית ) - Quph

in #hebrew6 years ago

Like the Alphabet, The letters in Hebrew are called the Alef - Beyt and they are presented on my blog from bottom to the top so you can learn them order, then to read them right to left. You will see what the original "Bible" said and what the names meant as they went through the stories of old.

Here is the letter Quph: Symbolizing the horizon or the sun at the horizon in the context of the cyclical revolution (revolving).

It is the nineteenth letter. It is a consonant and is also the number 100 when used as a number.

This letter is pronounced like a K in English for the most part.

In the verse below, you should be able to find the Quph in both occurrences of the verb "to call" where God sees that the light is good, separates the light and the darkness 'and he called' (v'yeekrah) the light Day and 'he called' (kah rah) the darkness Night.

I won't be doing an audio today. This verse is filled with words that contain the last three letters which you have not learned yet, Tav, Shin, and Resh. These last three letters are in many principal words that connect ideas like Alef Tav (eyt) which indicates the direct object. Alef Shin Kaph (ah-sher) meaning "that", "which", "who", or "whom" - the equivelent of the word "que" in Spanish. Indispensable.

Where we are so far

Only three more letters and you will be reading! Well, there are many you can read already.

Let's also start studying our vowels. There are five sounds for them.

Here is a chart.

  • the square represents any letter you choose.
  • the vowels are positioned as they would be in a written word.
  • there are five lines of vowels - five sounds

On the left an English word that contains the vowel sound

On the right a representation of that sound.

They are nearly the same as in Spanish and in the same order!

I have to say that there are slight differences - one might be a little longer than the one next to it, but the sound is the same. There are also combinations that may extend the sound of a vowel. I will leave this chart on the next seven lessons as we go through more letters.

We will soon be reading so get your Hebrew Bible soon! Click here to obtain the book we will using in a few short weeks. It is a free download - or browser usable

Thanks for taking the time to read.

HAPPY NEW YEAR.....

Great lesson and important language.contains "Quph " and they are presented is valuable.

Thanks @hebrew
Have a great day

I have read the 1st few volumes of the Sefer ha Zohar, Bahir and Sefer Yetzirah - these books actually help a great deal when looking for symbols and mnemonics to memorize the Hebrew Aleph-Bet and many of the words spoken by God in the Torah.

These are the 10 Sephirot. I'm looking for the letter Quph here .... Is it hiding ? I am wondering why a Quph is not used in the word "Malchuth" .... Kingdom. Seems like it would be a perfect fit.

Your blog is the best ever blog to know and understand the ivrit language and I am being to understand a lot better now.

@hebrew,
the sun at the horizon you nicely explained by using this image. Thank you very much for teaching us this amazing language! Wish you a Happy New Year too!

Cheers~

I wrote the letter and snapped a quick picture of it. If I wait too long, the ink soaks into the paper and deforms the letter. It was quite incidental that I added that shining sticker to it. The image needed something.

I love writing in Hebrew, but I need a better pen and nicer paper. I am using my kids' old homework paper.
