Thor loses Mjollnir
Thor woke up one morning to find his hammer, Mjollnir, missing. He searched here and he searched high and he searched low, but still he couldn’t find it. “Where is my hammer?” he cried out angrily. Without his most prized possession how could he defend Asgard from the giants?
Thor went to find his friend, Loki, to have help finding Mjollnir. Loki, a clever fellow, suggested that the giants might have come in the night and stolen it while Thor was asleep. “We must go to Jotunheim at once” said Loki. “But first, we must visit with Freyja. She has falcon feathers that can turn us into falcons. Then we can fly into Jotunheim”
Thor and Loki found Freyja and explained what had happened. “Oh my!” She remarked. “Of course I’ll help you. Take these feathers and fly into Jotunheim”. Unfortunately for Thor, he didn’t have experience with shape shifting so this was difficult for him. Instead, Loki, who was experienced in the art of deception, said he’d go and see if the giants did take Thor’s hammer.
As soon as Loki arrived in Jotunheim he turned back into his normal self and met with the chief of the giants, Thyrm. He was a very ugly and lonely giant. “I’m looking for Mjollnir, do you know where it is?” He asked. “Ah, the mighty hammer of Thor, god of thunder. Yes, we have it here in Jotunheim. It is buried 8 miles below the ground and that he will not give it back unless Freyja agrees to marry him” Thrym explained.
Loki flew back to Asgard to let a very angry and worried Thor that he had located his hammer, and to tell Freyja what Thyrm has told him about the proposal. “I will NOT marry that giant! Not now, not ever!” Freyja yelled, stamping her foot. “Thyrm is out of his mind”. Thor pleases with her. “Please Freyja, I cannot defend Asgard without Mjollnir”. She crossed her arms and turned up her nose.
The gods met in a council, to discuss how they could get Thor’s hammer back. Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard, banged his fist on the table. “Ah ha! I’ve got it” he exclaimed. “Thor should go to Jotunheim and pretend to be Freyja”. The other gods were in an uproar. “That is dishonorable” they shouted. “It’s an outrage. No man would dress like a woman, isn’t a disgrace” they protested. In all the commotion, Loki has sat in silence, deep in thought. “No no, this is a wonderful Idea” he said. “Without his hammer Asgard will be ruled by the giants. But without Thor acting as Freyja, he cannot get it back.” The gods murmered among one another. Finally they agreed that Loki was right, and a very angry Thor finally agreed. Loki, being a friend to Thor, offered to dress as his brides maid to make him feel better about the entire situation.
The gods spared no expense in making Thor the most beautiful bride in all of the 9 realms. He was beautiful. “My gods, you look as beautiful as Freyja” they joked. “Shut up!” snapped Thor.
Thor, the bride, and Loki, the brides maid, were ready to go to Jotunheim. They got in Thor’s carriage, which is drawn by goats, and embarked on their date to Jotunheim. When they arrived they were greeted by Thyrm, who was excited that the gods finally gave him a wonderful bride.
A grand feast was prepared for the bride, but Thor had a very large appetite and ate a whole ox, 8 fish and all the desserts that they had prepared for the women. He also drank many barrels of mead and ale. Thyrm noticed this. “I’ve never seen a woman with such an appetite” he said. Loki was quick to get them out of trouble. “She has been so love sick that she hasn’t eaten in an entire week” he said. This seemed to satisfy Thyrm and wanted to kiss the bride. He pulled back the veil and Thor flared back from under it. “Wow, you have such fierce eyes!” He remarked. Again Loki quickly came to the rescue. “She has been usable to sleep for her love for you is fierce”. Thyrm was so overjoyed at hearing this.
Shortly after eating, the wedding ceremony unsued. As was customary, Thyrm presented his bride with the hammer to hallow their marriage. When Mjollnir was handed to Thor he swung it around and killed all the giants at the wedding. Once they perished, Thor and Loki quickly went back to Asgard and removed their dresses and changed into something more of their style.
