Forget everything you've heard about coffee + The truth you need to know.

in #health6 years ago
Coffee is probably the most popular drink in the whole world. A cup of coffee in the morning, while you study or work, a coffee appointment ... There are many reasons to just have a cup! This glorius beverage fell straight down of heaven. Its popularity has made it one of the most studied beverages in history, to understand how it affects the body.

We love a good cup of coffee, but believe it or not, there is many people who doesn't like it, those are the ones who comes up with crazy facts or random myths about coffee. Well, its popularity comes with many stories behind, there are many myths about how harmful it can be, so I did a little research and made a brief list of some facts about it, to discover the truth behind that.

1. Coffee dehydrates you:

It's well known that caffeine is a natural diuretic, this is where this myth originates, but the amount that is urinated is not as significant as people believes. There are two things that are definitely true: Too much coffee can make you want to go to the bathroom more often and water is the best form of hydration.

CNN made an article about whether the coffee is healthy or not:

"Caffeine increases urinary calcium loss, but it is balanced by increased calcium absorption, so there seems to be no adverse effect on the calcium economy."

Said Connie Weaver, a distinguished professor of nutrition science at Purdue University.

You can check the main article here.

2. Coffee helps you to lose weight:

There is no proof of this, but there is something interesting: caffeine is a stimulant, it' s often used in pills to lose weight and, in the short term, it can raise your metabolic rate. You should also keep something in mind: people tend to drink coffee with cream and sugar that contain a lot of calories. Try using skim milk or drinking black (pure) coffee instead of coffee with milk, so you will drink more coffee than milk and sugar.

3. Coffee is bad, coffee can give you cancer:

This drink is actually on the list of foods against cancer, published by the American Institute for Cancer Research. Why is she considered an ally fighting cancer? Because it is high in antioxidants, these antioxidants protect your cells and help keep them healthy.

You can read here, a scientific article that talks a bit more about coffee and the risk of cancer.

4. Coffee is bad for you heart:

Caffeine can cause a brief temporary increase in blood pressure, for most healthy people it is not harmful (without any heart condition or condition).

Even coffee is considered a great ally to avoid clogged arteries, you can read a little more about this in the following article.

5. Coffee and cholesterol:

The alteration of cholesterol levels is one of the ways in which your daily consumption of coffee affects your health. The "cafestol", is a coffee compound that acts as a potential stimulator of increased LDL cholesterol. If you naturally do not have high levels of LDL cholesterol, you do not have to worry, but do not underestimate this fact.

Take a look at this article that I found related to this topic.

6. Coffee cures hangover:

No, he does not do it. It does not eliminate alcohol in your body, it will not help you with sobriety. This myth originates because coffee stimulates the central nervous system and improves focus, so if you have not slept well the night before, this could help.

7. Coffee makes boobs smaller!

I KNOW! This sounds ridiculous.. But there's a catch. This is a fun but interesting myth. It is assumed that women's breasts change as we get older, that is normal. It is well known that too much caffeine can affect hormones, this hormone decontrol can directly impact the size of the breasts, but it is a matter of moderation. It can also be considered that the increase in the metabolic rate or metabolic rate will help to consume the fat in the body (the breasts are composed mainly of fat).

Consider reading this article if this myth caught you.

8. Coffee ruins teeth:

This is how coffee stains look.

This is probably one of the most underrated myths of all. It is a fact that caffeine can filter calcium from bones; decreases the production of saliva and will definitely stain your teeth. The decrease in the production of saliva makes the oral pH more acidic, which leads to an increased reproduction of bacteria and makes the enamel of the teeth more susceptible to the action of bacterial acid.
