tips for choosing the best juicer for healing and detoxing
i just replaced my first juicer - that i used for several years. i watched close to 24 hours of videos on the topic of juicers and juicer reviews because there is quite a lot to learn and there is truly so much marketing misinformation in our world, that at least 80% of what is said is either a half truth or a straight lie. here's what i have learned...
juicing is a great way to increase nutritional intake, since we can ingest a concentration of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that we would otherwise have difficulty receiving. juicing is essentially the process of separating the plant fiber from the non-fiber and it is fair to say that in some senses our bodies are living juicers, since they also perform this type of process on foods that we eat. therefore, efficiently and correctly pre-juicing foods can greatly assist the body, since internal energy can be redirected for healing and other functions instead of digesting foods and processing/removing fiber into our waste materials.
centrifugal juicers
(the type that spin at high speed - which is the type i have used for several years).
these raise the temperature of the food and can damage enzymes, minerals and other beneficial components, thus reducing the overall quality of the juice. they also do not extract as much juice as other types of juicers - resulting with a wetter pulp. the juice will commonly not last very long since it oxidizes rapidly after having been processed violently and at high speed.
most juicers are this type and they are the least effective of the styles of electric juicers that are presently for sale.
masticating juicers (single/double auger type)
sometimes called 'slow juicers'. these are currently the most effective juicers i can find. they use a much slower rotation speed and a type of screw that gradually crushes the food instead of cutting it - the food is then usually pressed through a screen/mesh and possibly through another stage, depending on the specific juicer.
this type of juicer produces much greater yields of juice as compared to centrifugal juicers, the pulp is drier and the enzymes and other nutrition are kept in-tact. the food does not come into contact with high temperatures or violent cutting and high pressures.
the resulting juice can be stored for several days without degrading and usually is much more balanced and this can be seen visually when comparing the juice to that of a centrifugal juicer.
these cold-press/slow/auger/masticating juicers are more pricey than the centrifugal models, yet they are well worth the extra money, since they will produce higher quality juice and will lower the amount of fruit/veg that is used.
these models can also commonly be used to make nut butters, frozen deserts, pressed oils, pasta, bread and even muesli.
earlier models of these type of juicers were horizontal units, whereas the newer style are vertical and often include self cleaning functions. both styles have proven to be great at juicing a wide variety of materials and can both juice wheat-grass and leafy greens - however, the horizontal style is recommended for those who will mainly juice leafy greens, since they perform slightly better with these produce items.
presses
hydraulic presses also exist and can truly apply massive pressures to produce the absolute maximum amount of juice possible. some health experts have advised to combine a masticating juicer with a separate juice press, to maximise the yield - however, recent improvements in technology design come close to rendering this stage redundant. hydraulic presses are commonly as costly as one of the mid-range to top-end auger style juicers and so i would advise to invest in one of these auger juicers before going for a juice press. if you can easily stretch to get both, then why not experiment? :)
materials
many juicers are made using plastics that leach carcinogenic compounds into juices. so sticking to steel components or plastics that are specifically intended to be healthier than those used in many juicers is necessary for health. more recent models of juicers use what is known as GE ultem (or polyetherimide), which is so far not known to be a health risk and is far tougher than other commonly used plastics/resins.
other info
to get the best health results from juicing, we need to source the very best foods to juice. since healing requires that we detoxify from the poisons and non-healthy materials that are in our body, we need to ensure that we are preventing more of these poisons from entering us and doing what we can to heal them leave. this means choosing only organically grown foods and ideally also growing them ourselves. if we grow the foods ourselves, we can remineralise our soils, our foods and thus our bodies - since, most of the foods we can buy shops is coming from demineralised soils, this will make a great difference to us and our ability to heal and be healthy.
there are many other aspects to this process that are beyond the scope of this page, such as being aware of our body PH to aim for alkalysation and also being sure to move our body as our true desire and body truly directs. moving the body will increase the lymph flow, blood flow and oxygenation of the body, which is all beneficial.
another significant point is the warranty that is provided with the juicer. many cheaper juicers only offer a 1 or 2 year warranty - whereas the more reliable and slightly pricier manufacturers will offer 5, 10, 15 or even 20 years warranties on the unit's motor and in some cases on the parts too. i am informed that the motors rarely break, so the parts warranty is the key point here.
some great videos
as i said, i literally watched close to 100 videos while choosing my new juicer. i can greatly recommend john kola's youtube channel where he reviews many different types of juicers and shows you the finer points that the usual marketers will deny and gloss over. john also promotes remineralisation and organic gardening, he has much experience and wisdom to share.
