Curious Mind: The Life of a Color blind person (Test Included). Facebook is mostly blue because Mark Zuckerberg is Green-Red Color Blind!

in #health7 years ago (edited)

Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview,

Blue is the richest color for me. I can see all of blue

Welcome Steemians to this episode of Curious Mind. Relax and enjoy all I have for you.

Statistics show that 1 in 12 male (8%) and 1 in 200 female (0.5%) in the world is actually color blind. If you do not know your status yet, a test is included in this post. Surprisingly, I have met thousands of people but I am yet to meet a color blinded person. In this post I shall take my readers through the following;

  1. The world has seen by color blind friends
  2. Meaning, types and causes of color blindness (brief)
  3. Color deficiency test (you can take it right here)
  4. Great people who are/were color blind
  5. Experience the world as a color blind person

The world has seen by color blind friends

I do not intend to create a divide between color blind people and others with normal eye sight. This is why the sub-topic is "The world has seen by color blind friends”. I am using these examples to help us appreciate these special people and how they see the world in an unusual way.

I shall begin with the story of a young scientist of age 26 named John Dalton. John Dalton had a favorite jacket which he loved to wear. To him the jacket was Grey in color, but to others it was dark red. The difference in the way he saw color made him realise he had a color vision deficiency. I can imagine how it feels when you are told your favorite item is a different color from what you see. What of if today you are told your favorite friend is actually a white and not a black you thought?

There is a man from Cote D'Ivoire, another from Ireland and the last man from Italy. One of them is color blind, total deficiency type (will be discussed in a bit). They are in a marathon competition and the instruction is to end the race by standing by their country flags placed at the finish line. To a normal eye what they see is different flags, but the color blind participant can see no difference. Yeah! You are beginning to see how color blind people look at the world

Take a look at the traffic system, the light indications are red, green and yellow. My four years old niece can be taught to use the traffic system because she can distinguish colors already. But this is not easy for color blind people, they see same colors.

It is such an experience to watch my niece grow. Kids learn faster than we really can ever know. The problem I however discovered is that disorders in kids are difficult to understand. This brings to mind the movie, Like Stars on Earth. The young character in the movie had problem recognising alphabets (check the movie for more details). None except one understood his condition. In the same light, a child with this color confusion may have problem with simple concepts like painting, drawing, playing games etc.

Meaning, Types and Causes of Color Blindness (Brief)

Simply put, color blindness is the inability to see certain colours fully or partially. The different forms that exist are:

Total color blindness:

Inability of the eye to see any color at all. They only see the world in shades of grey ranging from black to white

Partial color blindness:

This can be two main types;

Red/green color blindness:
People that suffer from this type cannot see difference between red and green. They do not recognise shadows of red and green, both looks same;
Blue/yellow color blindness:
They have reduce sensitivity to blue. They see the world in red, grey, black, white, and turquoise.

Cause

Color blindness is a hereditary condition. It has been discovered to be a mutation on the X-chromosomes. This explains why most people affected are male. Except both chromosomes in a female carry this mutation, the normal chromosome overrides the affected one.

Nevertheless, the condition can also be has a result of eye or brain damage and old age.

Color Deficiency Test

It is as the name suggests, here you shall be taking a color blind test. Take your seat, close your eyes, breath in for 10 seconds, now breathe out for 10 seconds. This test is not a special one, perhaps millions of people had taken it already and it has proven to be effective.

If your eye sight is normal, you will see the numbers:

7, 5
26, 16
15, 45
6, 12
73

Thank you for taking the test, if you however find out you are color blind, remember this is not like cancer or HIV, so there is no need to worry. Please move on to the next topic.

Experience the world as a color blind person

It is a difficult task to imagine how life is for the color blind. I bet now you know that Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Clinton, among others, are color blind you wish to see how they see the world. I recommend using the following tools; ·

These tools have been carefully selected. With these you can change any picture of your choice to see how different color blind people see it. Please name other tools you are aware of in the comments section.

There are glasses that have been designed to help lessen this condition. However, American Committee on Optics & Visual Physiology

No method had been found for the correction of color blindness [and] any treatment which convinces operators that they can see colors they could not see before will decrease safety in transportation, decrease security in national defense, and decrease efficiency in industry.

Thank you for reading through. The formatting is the best I have used yet thanks to @teamsteem tutorials and references. I wish to know what you feel and if you have experience with this condition, please do share. I also appreciate your upvotes. Cheers!
