Dehydration that takes a Toll on our body: We are not aware of .....

in #health6 years ago (edited)

Hydration can be tricky thing. Unlike hunger, which triggers physical signals that are pretty robust, the signs of thirst can be more subtle and easier to ignore.

However, drinking enough water is both crucial to both physical and mental well-being.

Adult human is made of 60 Percent of water. It is the main component of our body and tissues. It is the main transport system that makes the various transport systems within our bodies possible, and it plays an essential role in the various chemical and electrical processes that keep us alive and healthy.

That means we have to continuously replace the water we lose each day through sweat, perspiration, urination and in various other physiological processes.

We replenish the water our bodies use through the foods we eat and fluids we drink. According to the National academy of sciences, women should be consumed 91 ounces and men should be consumed 125 ounces of total water. Depending on diet up to 20 percent of that water will come from foods like fruits, vegetables and liquid dairy products like milk, yogurt, kefir.

The balance of the deficit has to be made up through beverages. But not all beverages are created equal. Although sodas and fruit juices do provide water they also add a ton of sugar. Coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages can have a mild diuretic effect, and sports drinks while marketed to replenish sodium, potassium and magnesium we lose through sweat, are pretty high in sugar as well.

The symptoms of dehydration are headache, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, constipation, heat intolerance and blood pressure fluctuations.

Studies show that we also pay a cognitive price for dehydration. Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology found that losing as little as 2 percent of your body weight in fluids- Thats 2 pounds per every 100 pounds that you weigh- led to impaired decision making and lack of mental focus.

When study participants became mildly dehydrated not only affects their motor coordination but also their mental tasks like reading maps, doing arithmetic in their heads and proofreading. The more they are dehydrated the more their performance deteriorated.
So next time you feel any of those grab water to hydrate your body and mind.
