A Walk a Day Could Save Your Life
Recent studies have shown that a moderate amount of exercise such as walking 20 kilometers per week may help to prevent weight gain and can promote weight loss in non-dieting individuals. An eight-month study involving 182 overweight men and women, ages 40-60 years, confirmed that there was a clear relationship between the amount of physical activity and amount of weight loss. The study further suggests that weight can be managed by a modest amount of exercise, such as walking for half an hour each day.
Adding unnecessary weight is killing yourself slowly. Eating anything at anytime could be detrimental to an individual's life. You cannot be postponing your visits to the gym or your times for physical exercises.
A lot of people think exercise is only about lifting weights and muscle building but in actual fact, the form of exercise we need to maintain a healthy body is only just the basics. Lots of people are not athletic and it doesn't take athletism to actually exercise.
It Breeds a Stronger Heart
The heart is the organ responsible for pumping blood to every single part of the body and naturally, we are born with hearts strong enough for our structure and weight.
When blood is pumped out of the heart, it goes into the blood vessels to the various parts of the body, including the skin. When a patients gains weight, particularly through additional fatty tissues in the skin, the skin stretches to accommodate the fatty tissues. As there's more area to be covered, the blood vessels as well stretch and sometimes there are new blood vessels formed in those areas.
The heart is thereby given more work to do hence the issues like hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure. Walking helps exercise the heart in order for it to handle the extra weight as well as burn off the extra fatty tissues in the body.
It Prevents Strokes and Heart attacks
When people (especially adults) sit in a particular place or lay in bed for a long time, blood clots start forming within the blood vessels. These blood clots, when big enough could find their way to the coronary arteries in the heart and cause a heart attack. They could as well travel to the brain to cause a stroke.
Generally, where ever they travel to and block a block vessel, they prevent blood flow to that part of the body which leads to cell death and a lot of problems.
Sick and bedridden individuals are mostly affected by this. People that work in environments where they are required to stay or sit in a particular position or place are affected as well.
Programmers for example sit for hours, coding on their computers without moving around and this continues for days, sometimes weeks or months with just short breaks to eat and sleep. Walking once in a while significantly reduces the possibility of developing these embolisms.
It Makes You Stronger
Walking helps strengthen the musculoskeletal system.
Simply put, it prevents you from getting brittle bones as well as keep your muscles healthy and strong.
Walking is the simplest of all exercises a person could do. Some people consider it punishment but on the contrary it is one of the best, free treatment you can give yourself.
For those that haven't done that in a long time; jumping into walking for 30 minutes or an hour isn't a good idea. It's always better to start small and step it up as you can tolerate.
Make a decision today to walk daily, it may hurt a little bit at first but it will get easier and your body will be healthy.

good article Stanley thank you! I'm guilty of sitting in front of a computer for many hours at a time...but luckily I also have a dog which requires walking =)
Having a dog helps a lot... It's always easier when you have a partner to walk with.
I enjoyed reading this. I walk a lot but i once heard that walking too much will make one have "yam" legs ...hope you get me? Is that true?
I sit in one place foe long. Expecially in front of my laptop.
