Stuttering which is also called stammering, and by a further or broader term, disfluent speech.is simply a communication disorder which brings about a broken flow of speech by repetitions, prolongations or an abnormal stoppage of syllables and sounds.

People with this disorder might also experience an unusual movement (both facial and body) associated with an effort to speak. These speech disruptions are closely accompanied by struggling behaviors, an example is tremors of the lips and rapid eye blinks. Stuttering makes it extremely difficult for one to communicate with other person's, and this usually has an effect on the quality of one's life. Symptoms of stuttering varies very significantly through out a person's day. Speaking before a crowd or perhaps talking on the phone might actually cause a person's stuttering to be more severe, but reading, singing or even speaking in unison might actually aid to reduce stuttering temporarily. There are basically just three forms of stuttering: Developmental, neurogenic and psychogenic.

  • Developmental.: This type is very common in children which are younger than five (5) years old, especially males. It occurs as they develop their speech and language abilities and doesn't necessarily need treatment.

  • Neurogenic: Caused majorly by a perceived abnormalities in the signal between nerves or muscles and the brain.

  • Psychogenic: Originates from the part of the brain which governs reasoning and thought process (thinking)

Let's take a look at the various symptoms associated with stuttering.

Stuttering is mostly characterized by repetition of words, syllables or sounds and disruptions in the normal rate of speech. Let's say a person repeats the same consonant like T, G or K. They might also experience difficulty in uttering some certain sounds or even initiating a sentence. The stress which arises as a result of stuttering might show up in the following symptoms:

  • Physical changes such as lip tremors, excessive eye blinking, facial tics and tension in the face and and body

  • Consistent frustration in attempting to communicate

  • Frequently repetition of words or phrases

  • Pause or hesitation before starting to speak

  • Prompt refusal to speak

  • Rearrangement of words in a sentence

  • Noticeable tension in voice

Social settings and high-stress environments can increase the likelihood that a person will stutter. speaking in public could present itself as terrifying to those who stutter.

There are basically four factors which would likely to contribute to the progress of stuttering they include:

  • Genetics: This accounts for approximately about sixty percent (60%), thus anyone who is know to stutter would also have a family member who does same.

  • Neurophysiology: Results of recent neurological research has proved that persons who stutter process language and speech quite differently, although slightly from those who do not stutter.

  • Child Development: Over time, children with other varieties of speech, language problems or developmental delays find it very difficult not to stutter.

  • Family Dynamics: An extremely very high expectation(s) or a fast paced lifestyle could easily lead to stuttering.

How Is Stuttering Treated?

Not every person who stutter would require medical treatment due to the fact that developmental stuttering usually resolves by itself with time. Speech therapy is an adoptable option for children.

Speech Theraphy

Speech therapy would reduce the frequency in speech interruptions, thereby improving one's self-esteem. Speech therapy mostly looks forward to controlling speech patterns bu way of encouraging a child to continually check their rate of speech, breath support, and tension.Parents could also help their child to feel less self-conscious about stuttering by using therapeutic techniques.Listening patiently is very important and a speech therapist would assist parents to learn when it is the appropriate time to correct a child’s stuttering.

Other Treatments

Apart from speech therapy, electronic devices might be adopted for the treatment of stuttering. One type which would encourages children to talk more slowly, this happens when the device by plays back an already altered record of their voice at points. take when they speak quickly, another device which could be worn are hearing aids,
Presently, there isn't any medications available which have scientifically proven to reduce episodes of stuttering.

Yass, another informative one here.

I think I, and a vast majority of people around employ the use of insertions in their daily speech. (Stammerers and non-st).

With this in mind, would it be okay to call anyone exhibiting the art of insertions or having a block, a stammerer?
