The term miscarriage is commonly associated with a pregnancy which ends involuntarily within the first twenty (20) weeks, which is approximately about five (5) months. Let's not mistake miscarriage for stillbirth; A fetus dying in its mother's womb. This occurs when pregnancy is 20weeks or more. So the risk of having a miscarriage naturally reduces as pregnancy progresses and drops when a doctor detects the heartbeat of the fetus.

The level at which pregnancies are lost to miscarriages are way higher than any other “condition”. Due to this reason, everyone must be aware of ways to prevent miscarriages from occurring, irrespective of your gender. Factually, men need this information so they would be able to support their wives especially in the first trimester in a bid to prevent a miscarriage from occurring. Before we delve deeper into the preventive measures for miscarriage, let's look at what even brings about a miscarriage.

What Could Cause A Miscarriage?

Athough one might not usually be able to identify the root cause of a miscarriage, most miscarriages are caused by some genetic abnormalities. This happens usually at the first trimester phase of the pregnancy. Put simply, pregnancies are lost at this stage of development when something goes or is wrong with the baby chromosomes. This usually occurs probably as a result of a damaged egg cell or egg, at the point when the fertilized egg cell (zygote) is dividing. When this happens, one really has no control over this problem, irrespective of how much you care for the pregnancy.

This are relatively still for some miscarriages, some other cause might include the following:

  • An healthy lifestyle: This basically relates to smoking, drug use and abuse, malnutrition, exposure to radiation and consumption of caffeine in excessive quantities

  • The age of the mother: The chances of miscarriages occurring goes higher with age.

According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, the number of miscarriages in the first trimester for women increases dramatically as a woman ages. Here are the statistics showing this rise:

Age 20 to 30 years: 9 to 17 percent miscarriage rate

Age 35 years: 20 percent miscarriage rate

Age 40 years: 40 percent miscarriage rate

Age 45 years: 80 percent miscarriage rate

The miscarriage rate is lower for women who have had a child previously, about 5 percent up to 20 gestational weeks.

  • Maternal trauma

  • Hormonal problems or infections in the mother

  • When the implantation of the egg into the uterine does not happen as it should have

One thing that hasn't been proven over time to cause miscarriage is sex and also moderate exercise (except in a harmful environment)

Now that we have an ample knowledge of what could bring about miscarriages, let's look at some mediums we could adopt in preventing it.

Control and regulation of blood sugar level:

Irrespective of if you are diabetic or not, every pregnant woman should endeavour to monitor and control their blood sugar level, as high consumption of sugary foods has its part to play in the occurrence of miscarriage; thus sugar levels must be moderate.

Stop taking harmful substances:

The best time for a woman to stop drinking of alcoholic beverages and smoking, as well as drug use is at the point when she gets pregnant, at least this must be done for the sake of the baby.

Be Mindful of coffee:

You probably loved taking coffee before you got pregnant, but now you are pregnant and you got to watch your intake of coffee, tea and caffeinated beverages, infant you should allow your doctor be your guide or at best, you should avoid caffeine on a general note.
