Aloe vera: a super food or not?

in #health8 years ago (edited)

Aloe vera (/ˈæloʊiː/ or /ˈæloʊ/) is a succulent plant species of the genus Aloe

It is very easy to grow almost self sustained plant. Need rarely watering and it will be just fine. It is a nice decorative plant but barely just that.

Its use varies to medical and beauty sectors. It is used to treat several conditions that it would take 4 posts just to mention them. It is considered a super food for many but is it that harmless?

The plant can reach up to  60–100 cm (24–39 in)  in height and you can easily transplant it by the use of offsets. It has fleshy leaves that contains the material that is so beneficial to our health. During summer it produce some stunning flowers.

Two 2009 reviews of clinical studies determined that all were too small  and faulty to allow strong conclusions to be drawn, but concluded:  "there is some preliminary evidence to suggest that oral administration  of aloe vera might be effective in reducing blood glucose in diabetic  patients and in lowering blood lipid levels in hyperlipidaemia. The  topical application of aloe vera does not seem to prevent  radiation-induced skin damage. The evidence regarding wound healing is  contradictory. More and better trial data are needed to define the  clinical effectiveness of this popular herbal remedy more precisely."[42][44] One of the reviews found that Aloe has not been proven to offer protection for humans from sunburn.[44]

Uses varies from skin treatment to gastroenterology deceases, to hair rebuild and more. but there are some ecidence that we should be very carefully when it comes to oral consumption as the  non-decolorized Aloe Vera leaf extract  it is believed to have cancerous side effects.

Toxicity
Under the guidelines of California Proposition 65, orally ingested non-decolorized aloe vera leaf extract has been listed by the OEHHA, along with goldenseal, among "chemicals known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity".[62] Use of topical aloe vera is not associated with significant side effects.[53] Oral ingestion of aloe vera, however, may cause abdominal cramps and diarrhea which in turn can decrease the absorption of drugs.[53] IARC studies have found ingested non-decolorized liquid aloe vera[63] to be carcinogenic in animals, and state that it is a possible carcinogen in humans as well.[64]

For sure Aloe Vera is a unique plant with many uses. But be cautious if you are going for oral consumption, non-decolorized Aloe Vera can be potential very dangerous. As I've read on the article below which is date back in dec-2015.

I am pasting it and properly sourcing it for you to continue your research and dig further to it if you wish so.

Prop 65: California adds Aloe vera non-decolorized whole leaf extract & Goldenseal root powder to known carcinogen list

My advice for it, is to stick on the cosmetic appliances for now, until scientists collect further evidence of its benefits as an oral consumption medicine. Or stick to products approved for oral corruption rather than creating potential cancerous products on your own. Remember that you-tubers should not replace scientists. Do not take advice for health issues from celebrities. Without analyzing and criticizing further on your own with some research before hand. Health it is not something to play around with.

Have a pleasant night steemers... Or day.

Best regards.

I've always wondered about this... my gf, mom, and grandma all swear by it...

oral consumption should be something to avoid at least if you don't know how to properly process the plant.

Darn... I was hoping it would make me taller and better looking ;)

Very Nice Plants

If you peel it then blend into a smoothie it's delicious.

And probably carcinogenic. You should read the research about it.

I will have to disagree with you my friend. Don't forget that there are carcinogens in the air we breath if you lιve in a city. I will stop drinking aloe when I leave city I live in.
