Sushant is 28 years old. In the past year, his weight increased by about 15 kg (weight gain). Recently, he decided to lose weight, and to achieve this, he started dieting rigorously and exercising vigorously. However, over the last month, he has been experiencing dizziness while working out. When he lifts weights at the gym, his head suddenly starts spinning and he sees stars in front of his eyes. He has even fainted 2–3 times. Why do I feel dizzy while exercising?

It’s often said that the body isn’t prepared for heavy exercise or rapid movements without proper warm-up. When this occurs, the body enters a ‘shutdown mode,’ causing a drop in blood pressure. This can lead to dizziness or even temporary vision loss.

Another factor is inadequate hydration before or during exercise. Simply drinking water right before exercising isn’t sufficient. Maintaining proper hydration throughout the day is crucial to prevent electrolyte imbalances.

Electrolyte deficiencies, particularly sodium, potassium, and sugar, can occur otherwise. These imbalances can result in low blood pressure and subsequent dizziness.

Sitting or lying down after experiencing dizziness often restores blood pressure to normal levels.

Therefore, maintaining a balanced diet throughout the day and staying adequately hydrated are important.

A third reason is improper breathing technique. Gym trainers often stress the importance of correct breathing during exercise, such as inhaling while lifting weights and exhaling while lowering them.

However, some individuals hold their breath while lifting weights, leading to insufficient oxygen intake. The brain doesn’t receive enough oxygen, causing sudden spikes in blood pressure.

Exhaling while lowering weights can then lead to excessively low blood pressure. This situation can also contribute to vision issues and dizziness.

Is This Cause for Concern?

Electrolyte imbalances can potentially lead to irregular heartbeats (heart arrhythmia).

There’s a risk of heart attacks due to reduced oxygen and blood supply to the brain and muscles.

Heart rate, typically between 80 and 100 beats per minute, can suddenly increase to 140, 150, or even 200 beats per minute.

Preventive measures are essential, especially if there’s a pre-existing condition like high blood pressure, diabetes, or thyroid issues.

Engaging in exercise without proper warm-up can elevate the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and cardiac arrests, especially in this scenario.

If you experience irregular heartbeats or any cardiac or neurological symptoms.

Muscle ischemia can also affect some individuals.

Muscle ischemia refers to muscle death caused by insufficient oxygen and blood supply, akin to a muscle heart attack.

While all these conditions can be severe, timely medical attention can help mitigate their effects.

Maintaining electrolyte balance through diet and hydration can significantly aid in prevention, allowing you to continue exercising after a proper warm-up.
