This article describes the mechanisms of renin secretion, as known back in 1983. It shows that renin secretion from the juxtaglomerular cells is stimulated by decreased cytosolic calcium, which in turn is caused by hypotension, beta adrenergic stimulation, PTH, glucagon, certain prostaglandins, among others. It also states that the renin secretion is decreased by an increase in cytosolic calcium caused by hypertension, alpha adrenergic stimulation, certain prostaglandins, angiotensin, vasopressin, etc.

Many factors affect the secretion of renin, which is important to determine the cause and possible treatment of hypertension.

There is hypertension associated to low plasma renin activity and hypertension associated to medium and higher levels of plasma renin activity
