The Serenity Prayer was something I learned in rehab. Five years on, I no longer subscribe to the many rules of AA, NA and the 12 Step Program but I do find myself coming back to these words time and time again.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I can,

and the wisdom to know the difference.

I want to share them with you now because they seem to be very important words in this crazy modern world.

We very often find ourselves in situations that could potentially stress us out but when we apply these words to the situation, there is no more reason to feel stress.

Can you do something about this thing you would like to change in your life?

• If yes, get on with it.

• If no, accept your situation and get on with something that makes you feel good. Ideally something that does not involve the use of drugs or alcohol!

The difficulty

Well, the difficulty is the third bit. Knowing the difference.

How do you know how hard to push in trying to change some aspect of your life, or the life of someone around you?

I cannot give you the answer to this question for it will always be personal to you.

But one thing I can say for sure is that whatever you decide is the right decision.

And the more you believe this, the more it will become this.

If you do decide to change the thing you want to change, do not focus any further attention on the problem, but only on the solution.

If you practice seeking solutions the moment problems arise, you will find eventually there are no more problems. Only things that need to get done today.
