The hidden danger of touchscreens
Touch screen cell phones are no more or less dangerous than any other cell phone. The danger comes from the magnetic field generated by the high frequency (usually PCS - which is in the microwave range) carrier, and you get that by holding the phone close to your ear while talking. But the relative size (not to mention the strength) of the field generated by the electronics needed for the touchscreen is minimal compared to the carrier frequency, so before you are talking on the phone (i.e. using the touch screen), there is no danger.
The health risks associated with prolonged computer use have been well documented. Now, however, mobile devices are also being examined.Living with twenty-first century touchscreen technology has been awesome, but could it be coming with a cost on our health?
.Repeated motion injuries. Commonly known as RSIs, for repetitive stress injuries, these ailments result from recurrent large or small movements that affect joints, muscles, tendons, and nerves. For example, people who frequently use their thumbs to type text messages on cellphones sometimes develop de Quervain syndrome, a painful affliction that involves the tendons that move the thumb. Although the causal link isn't as well established as in patients who suffer from pain from prolonged desktop keyboard use, there's little doubt that overzealous texting can cause debilitating pain.
Increases Risk Of Eye Vision Problems Staring at your mobile device can cause problems in your vision later in life. Screens on mobile devices tend to be smaller than computer screens, which means you are more likely to squint and strain your eyes while reading messages.
Back pain is also common with increased cell phone use, especially if you hold the phone between your neck and shoulders as you multitask. "Long periods of cell phone use cause you to arch your neck and hold your body in a strange posture..
In a study published by the NCBI, researchers concluded that “due to touchscreens, users are exposed to extreme wrist postures that are less neutral than other computing technologies and may be at greater risk of developing musculoskeletal symptoms.” They continued, “Tablets should be placed in cases or stands that adjust the tilt of the screen rather than supporting and tilting the tablet with only one hand.”
PRECAUTIONSUse hands-free to decrease the radiation to the head
Keep the mobile phone away from the body
Do not use telephone in a car without an external antenna
