Is It Really A Yeast Infection or Something Worse?

Most people mistake the symptoms of other vaginal infection with those of a yeast infection. While for others, the reverse is the case. It is important to properly differentiate yeast infection from other vaginal infections. This is so you don’t go ahead treating yourself for a yeast infection you don’t have. For most people, any vaginal discharge or rashes around the genital is yeast. Is this true? Well, let us take a moment to find out.

Yeast infection:

Yeast infection is caused by the overgrowth of fungal organisms, usually the Candida albican species. When it invades and takes control of the crotch, normally called vaginal yeast infection in women, the symptoms include itching and burning of the vaginal area, white cottage cheese-like discharge coming out of the vaginal canal and other symptoms like pain during sex and rashes around the vaginal area. Vaginal yeast infection is often caused by a sudden depreciation in the quantity of the good bacteria in the crotch area which may be set off by a couple of other factors like hormone changes in the body, dieting system, etc.

Yeast infection at the head of the penis (in the case of a male genital) may or may not show obvious symptoms. When there is a symptom it is basically rashes appearing at the head of the penis which may or may not be painful.

Yeast infection in the mouth also called oral yeast infection or thrush often come with obvious symptoms like a milk-like deposits sitting on the red base of the tongue. These often look like it can easily be taken away but a forceful attempt to do that with a sharp object like razor may lead to injury with blood.

While yeast infection on the skin, in the mouth and at the head of the penis can be a little less difficult to identify, most women often confuse other bacterial infection (of the vagina) with yeast infection. And so this article is meant to help you understand the different symptoms you might experience in each case.

Bacteria Vaginosis

Unlike yeast infection, bacterial infection is the overgrowth of one of the normal bacteria in the body, like the bacterial vaginal flora, to the point that it becomes pathogenic and causes an infection with health complications. Common species of these bacteria include Gardnerella and Bacteroides. The symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include yellow, grey or greenish discharge from the vaginal canal. Discharge may have a fishy or foul odor. And like yeast infection, you may also have vaginal burning with bacterial infection
