How does it feel eating and drinking nothing for 40 hours?steemCreated with Sketch.

I'd been reading about fasting for quite some time now. Many prophets, philosophers and great thinkers from the past are fasting as part of their daily lives. Why were they doing this? How about today? Even skipping a single meal a day would make us murmur or feel bad. Why do people of old fasted long and quite far from our fasting style today?

As far as I know intermittent fasting is I guess the most popular fasting being practiced. Many describe it as eat, stop, eat. But depends on each and every person's capability of doing it.

The influential people of old mostly fasted 40 days and 40 nights eating and drinking nothing for that period. Let's not get confused, 40 days and 40 nights is also 40 days because a night is included in a day. 40 days and 40 nights is just an elaboration explained specifically for accuracy.

Instead of 40 day fasting, I tried it 40 hours of fasting just to try it out as an experiment because since childhood, we'd been eating enormously until today. We even sometimes forget to breath and we're breathing short because our mouth is bombarded with foods. We're even unaware that our digestive system are already tired of digesting our foods on a daily basis. We're young but our stomach are already old, tired and weak dealing with these foods.
Try to recall, when was the last time you skip even a single meal?

Breakfast is no longer my meal for almost 2 years now. I'm trying to make it to one meal a day but maybe I'll take it slowly, or try some day or days of fasting to integrate and balance it and see how my body reacts to it. I just find fasting as a reasonable thing to practice. Its not actually my goal to be great why I'm doing this. I just see the benefits of it. It all started in knowing, reading and learning before its done in real life. It starts with the mind for quite some time before applying it. Its not magic when someone says, "I'll fast." Then the next day or next meal, that person stops eating right away. No! Its not that simple. Maybe that person can do it right away but the consistency of her/his actions will not happen definitely.

How does it feel eating and drinking nothing for 40 hours? Wow! If you haven't tried it, don't try it. Take it slowly or else you'll die right away without eating and drinking. This is what almost all parents would tell us. We will die if we don't eat nor drink. The fact is we'll die faster without breathing than without eating or drinking.

When I hit the 40-hour taking no food and no drink, all I did was to breath deeply. I'm living in a town with undisturbed nature still on our place. Breathing fresh air feels really good! I closed my mouth and breath in my nostril because If I breath using my mouth, then its no longer fasting because I'm eating air already. (Not really a good joke!)
Have you tried breathing really real fresh air and feels good on it?

I wanted to prolong my 40-hour fast but I thought it would be much better to take these things one thing at a time. That period made me think of drinking water. It felt like I haven't drink water for my entire life. And was thinking how refreshing would it be to drink water. When I started drinking water, the feeling was far very different the way I felt when I was drinking water naturally without awareness. The usual we drink water just merely drinking it for the sake of drinking and nothing more. Even in meals we just eat and sometimes we forget to make a little act of thanksgiving for the foods or drinks, we just eat and drink right away. The usual thing we do now a days, is we take pictures on the meal table, that's the first thing we do now. Are you doing this? Then upload the photo on social media. Wow! This is our future!

When eating came to my mind after the 40-hour fast period. I felt like eating any food as long as I could eat would be that delicious food. I guess its natural because of that 40-hour period fast. I guess you try it, to appreciate everything that we do even in the most simplest things.

“I live to enjoy life by the littlest things, feeling the grass between my toes, breathing fresh air, watching the wind sway the trees, enjoying the company of loved ones, a deep conversation, getting lost in a good book, going for a walk in nature, watching my kids grow up. Just the feeling itself of being alive, the absolute amazing fact that we are here right now, breathing, thinking, doing.”

Fasting made me realized that we sometimes need a break or reboot or recharge ourselves in order to get rid of those unnecessary files in our directory like our PC or computer. With the long course of using our computers, they get tired and sometimes affected by malware or viruses. To clean all these up totally and ultimately is to reformat the computer to restore to its peak performance. I find this example similar to ourselves. Getting rid of toxins in our body is to not take those things that make those toxins. Unlike computers that we could easily buy a new one if we want to, we can't buy our body and have our new body. There are similarities and dissimilarities between computers and humans. Even cloning would not perfectly be identical to the one cloned. (My understanding only. I guess I'm right if not wrong.)

The initial reaction to fasting is, "I'm gonna die without eating and drinking. Skipping a meal would starve me to death!"
When we reach the point of questions, and feeling failures in ourselves, our body, our health, our relationships, this is often times the time when we're left alone in ourselves and could think deeply, "What all these are all about?" Then we tend to think from the past, our childhood memories up to this present time and inevitably think of what would have after all are done in this life. And ultimately, "What must I do now?"

I think it's very important to have a feedback loop, where you're constantly thinking about what you've done and how you could be doing it better. I think that's the single best piece of advice: constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself.

Getting serious to something will not happen quickly. We can think right now, "I'll quit smoking!" Its all in the mind from the start. The fulfillment is sometimes forever unfulfilled and unreachable, the worst to happen.

Lets not wait to hit 80 years old and decide to start a new, healthy and inspiring life.

As always,

Thanks @ronel for sharing this carefully written and informative piece.

This statement is a bit funny, but then has a subtle truth in disguise:

We're young but our stomach are already old, tired and weak dealing with these foods.

Fasting is really with great health benefits, as well as spiritual benefits. Its process is not a very easy routine for someone to all of a sudden get use to. But if one want to enjoy its benefit, one must engage in intermittently.

However, the use of discretion is always advised.

Kind regards.
