KAPHA and its 5 Subtypes
The Kapha dosha consists of 2 Panchamahabhutas (5 great elements) Jal(Water) and Prithvi(Earth) and represent structure, unification, cohesiveness, stability, stored energy and bonding in the body. It governs stability and lubrication and is seated primarily in the chest. Increase of Kapha causes obstruction of channels, paleness, hypo-throidism, rigidness, heaviness, disturbed digestion, excessive sleep, looseness in joints, shortness in breathe and excessive secretions in the mouth. Decrease of Kapha causes low self esteem, delirium, dryness is skin, joint cracking, pricking pain, body tremors and various burning.
The Kapha relates to the first stages of life and corresponds to the upper third of the body from upper chest upwards. The Kapha times of day are 6am to 10am and 6pm to 10pm.
Kapha Subtype 1) Tarpak Kapha- has an inward motion and is located in the head and heart. It is responsible for strength, nourishment, lubrication of nerves, and governs emotional calm, stability and happiness. Also controls the memory and capacity to retain ideas.
Kapha Subtype 2) Bodhak Kapha- located in the tongue and throat it governs taste and the refinement and identification of taste. The sense of taste is present only due to good functioning Bodhak Kapha and is part of the first stage of digestion. Has upward moving action.
Kapha Subtype 3) Kledak Kapha- located in the stomach, it is the alkaline secretions of mucous lining of digestive tract, which aid in the liquefaction of food and is the first stage of digestion. Kledak Kapha has a balancing action and is the protection of the digestive tract from the Pachak Pitta.
Kapha Subtype 4) Shleshak Kapha- it lubricates every joint in the body, and is seated in the joints. It keeps joints and tissues soundly knit and well lubricated.
Kapha Subtype 5) Avalambak Kapha- This type of Kapha dosha has downward action and is seated in the chest. Avalambak Kapha keeps the chest, lungs, and back very strong. It facilitates strong muscles and protects the heart.
