Do You Like Your Skin Tone and Texture?
Given the exploits of science and technology, and the progressive world we live in, many people desire and strive to maintain a youthful, alluring skin and body structure daily.
While some people are very fortunate to be blessed with amazing and almost flawless skin types, some others have to continuously work hard to keep their skin looking sharp, healthy and beautiful.
We tend to admire beautiful things, especially good-looking skin tones and textures. But while #science has shown that some genetic factors often contribute to the lovely skin nature of some people, there are certain habits some people daily apply to their beauty regimen, to ensure that their skin looks very radiant and healthy.
Having said that, some common habits we indulge in, also tend to have long-term damaging effects on our skin. Therefore, avoiding the various skin-damaging habits highlighted below can help us maintain and achieve a radiant and healthy skin, which we all desire.
(1) Sleeping on dirty bed sheets
Failing to wash your sheets regularly could result in your sheets being an ideal ecosystem for germs, bacteria and other microscopic pathogens, with the tendency to damage our skin.
Regularly washing your sheets is very important, because researches done on microbial communities have shown that the type of germs and bacteria found on pillow cases and bedsheets are similar to those found on toilet sits. So, go figure.
You want a good skin, start by keeping a clean bedsheets, pillow case and duvets. Failure to do so, could result in various kinds of skin irritations due to a variety of microbes that can breakout from dirty sheets.
(2) Smoking cigarettes
Aside having harmful effects on a major body organ like the lungs, cigarettes can actually have negative impacts on the skin. Collagen and Elastin fibers in the skin can be damaged and compromised by the toxicity of chemical found in cigarettes. This eventually leads to wrinkles, fine lines and premature again seen on smokers. Our skin tone, elasticity and texture can also be affected by smoking, so quitting the habit can help slow down the skin wrinkling process of the body and enhance our skin appearance.
(3) Skin enhancement or bleaching
The new lingua used by ladies who do not like admitting that they bleach their skin is enhancement.
“No, I don’t bleach my skin, I just enhance it with creams”.
Well, a recent publication by the World Health Organization estimates that about 70% of Nigerian women bleach or enhance their skin. This statistics shows that lots of women, for the sake of fashion demands, tend to expose their skin to various chemicals which have the potential in the long run, to damage their skin.
Most skin care products which are often unregulated can have long lasting and harmful effect on the skin. A chemical like Hydroquinone, which is a component of most bleaching products may lead to exogenous ochronosis, if used a high concentrations.
Skin bleaching is highly dangerous and should be avoided, because a chronic exposure to bleaching chemicals can lead to unpleasant skin discoloration of blackish/bluish patches and hyper-pigmentation
(4) Constant stress
Stress seems to be a component of everyday life, especially for the working class populace. But if stress is an essential part of your daily work routine, then it is advisable to adopt stress management techniques suited to your work type or category.
Stress is known to accelerate the aging of the skin and is also linked to the formation of acne on the skin, because certain oils like sebum which promotes acne can be stimulated by stress hormones such as cortisol.
So, to improve the quality of your skin, you would need to reduce and keep your stress and anxiety levels at a minimum.
(5) Not drinking enough water
In tropical climatic regions, one is faced with dehydration due to lots of heat and humidity. The human body requires lots of water to function at an optimal level. Hence, drinking lots of water is essential in maintaining a vibrant skin, because dehydration can often have damaging effects on the skin, including leaving the skin dry and dull.
This is a very educative post @rickie. Sometimes i find it laughable how avidly people use some chemicals they know nothing about all in the name of enhancing their skin. I always say that the best skin anyone can get is that which was given by nature. It behoves us, however to ensure that our skin is in the best shape possible. See yah on discord! Ha!

This is a pretty good one @rickie. Indeed the skin is a very important organ of the body that must be cared for adequately. WHy? Simply because it serves so many functions like protecting against germs, retaining body moisture, maintaning body temperature. In addition to that, its the first structure that is visualized when we look at a person.
