The goal of such treatment is to reproduce insulin secretion as physiological as possible, that is to say most faithfully imitating the insulin secretion of the pancreas, guaranteeing optimal efficiency. As a result, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) now regard the portable insulin pump as the "Gold Standard" of insulin therapy.

Compared to multi-injection treatments, the continuous supply of insulin by the pump allows:

more flexibility and lifestyle freedom, including greater flexibility at mealtimes, more accurate and consistent doses of insulin, better blood glucose control, and therefore lower risk long-term complications by better regulation of HbA1c.

This treatment enters today a new era, taking an additional step towards the artificial pancreas: that of the direct link between a continuous blood glucose meter and the insulin pump. Few patients currently benefit from these new devices gradually arriving on the French market.
