HEADACHES, WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Hello guys, it's @pasaift. Today I would be talking about a general phenomenon which we all experience. "Headache" This generally means a pain experienced/felt in the head.
Headache is a medical condition with the highest number of occurrence. It is not age or gender specific, as anyone can be affected.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO)

Almost half of all adults will experience a head ache in a given year.

Now what does headache represent? Headache usually could be a sign indicating stress or a state of emotional distress, or a medical disorder.

CAUSE

Headache can be caused by irritation of the pain-sensing area in the head. There are other reasons that could result in headaches, they include

  • stress
  • hunger
  • emotional disorder
  • drugs withdrawal
  • change in hormone level ( usually seen in menstruation)
  • Exhaustion etc

CLASSIFICATION

Headaches are generally divided into 2, namely primary and secondary headaches.

PRIMARY

This type is usually caused by brain overactivity or as a result of problems with pain-sensing part of brain. One thing to note is that a primary headache does not mean that there is disease in the body.
It is caused by poor posture, inadequate rest, stress etc. Examples of this kind of headache includes:

  • migraine (pulsating/ throbbing pain at one side of the head)
  • cold headache
  • sex headache
  • cluster headache (duration of appx. 1hour and occurs several times daily)
  • tension headache (begins slowly and continues during the day )
    .

SECONDARY

This is as a result of a disease, and it's ability to stimulate the painsensitive part of the brain. A headache is refered to as secondary, when it is not caused by brain overactivity, but caused by another reason. It's causes includes:

  • brain freeze
  • bleeding around the brain
  • sinus infection
  • brain aneurysm
  • brain tumors
  • glaucoma , etc.

Since we now know that headache has two sides (primary and secondary) I would advise that headaches shouldn't be treated always as a simple matter by either resting, or self medicating. A doctor should be visited if the pain becomes persistent and severe, as this could be the sign of an infection.
