LSD for the Terminally Ill
In the '60s, the government subsidized many experiments to explore the potential of LSD. One of the early experimenters described it as a non specific amplifier of the unconscious. It was suggested that LSD may be a modulator of the mind and the key to unlocking its mysteries.
Today scientists feel that LSD might alleviate terminal cancer patients from their severe dysphoria in lieu of opiates. Opiates and other similar drugs leaves the patients in a state where they can't respond to stimulus.
In a study approved by the FDA, NIH and DEA, they used psilocybin as a stand alone treatment. The study involved 12 patients with terminal cancer, they medicated some with psilocybin and others with niacin. The tests were double blind meaning that neither the doctors nor the patients knew what they were receiving. The results were the psilocybin elevated the patient's overall mood and reduced their depression. The effect was still present (to a degree) six months after the treatment ended. Several similar studies were performed producing like results.
Overall they concluded that use of psilocybin as an alternative to opiates is beneficial. Not only is it less addictive but it preserves the patient's cognitive abilities unlike the opiates.

Alternative medications should be looked into more frequently, the use of something to alleviate pain and suffering should never stem back to supposed drug addiction of yesteryear.
I think you are correct. Based on what I've read, CBD's seem to be looked into as one alternative. Thank you for your comment.
Ha Ha I would love to see my Gran on LSD. Man, I used to take this with friends in my teens. What a blast. If only I could remember some of the concepts that would unravel. Felt like you could solve any problem in detail but soon as you came down you'd totally forget how you came to the conclusion. Crazy stuff..
Based on what it does, I think older folks would be better off with the LSD than the opiates. I could see older folks smoking joints but I just can't see them tripping. Crazy world.
No me neither but I imagine they might enjoy it. There is the one called Iboga too. That changed Bruce Parry's life, after he had some on, whilst filming his TV show about different tribes. Very spiritual apparently. Sure I'd rather be whacked of my head than dosed up on tranq's. I'm all for it, so remember I said this when I start going south..
You might be thinking of ayahuasca. It's a hallucinogenic plant. It grows in South America. Here's a link to a bbc article. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27203322
