WHY WORRY, WHEN YOU CAN SLEEP...

In today's world, the Race to Success is fast becoming very competitive. At a point, we seek the cooperation of Mother Nature to further stretch time beyond 24 hours per day to help complete our daily hustle, forgetting that time is never enough.

From hand to mouth, the story of my daily toil.

This quest for more time makes millions around the world work round the clock, giving little or no time to sleep.


Today's article is made to bring back to our consciousness why we still need our beds; why sleep is still needful and important.

To some, it's a state of inactivity; to few, it's a transition from one realm to another and to most of my sarcastic friends, it's just "an open relationship with death; death with benefit"😄
However you wish to see it, Sleep is that lover that calls us every night to her drowsy arms and pushes us off the next morning.

Scientifically, sleep is a period of rest for the body and mind, during
which volition and conciousness are in
partial or complete abeyance and the bodily
functions partially suspended.

The spiritualist perceives sleep to be a spiritual heaviness that
must be shaken off in order to remain awake in this evil time.

The hyperactive kid just wants to remain active, see sleep as a state of laziness.


As cliche as it sounds, we all need to sleep!

In Nigeria, where I come from, we have a saying, "Body no be firewood!" meaning that the body isn't immune to stress and the resulting effects.


So, to begin with, permit me to outline the keys to a quality sleep.

National Sleep Foundation (NSF) in a report published in sleep health listed the key determinant for quality good to include:

-Sleeping more while in bed (at least 85 percent of the total time).
-Falling asleep in 30 minutes or less; and
-Waking up not more than once per night

Sometimes, challenges could arise in the way to getting a good sleep. Like I earlier said, most comes from pressure to succeed, so more effort is pumped at work, in school and at home.

The challenges to a good sleep include:
-Anxiety
-Anger
-Stress
-Depression
-Fear
-Deep thoughts
-Poor health condition
-Hunger

Sleep, as easy as it sounds, it may be very hard to come by. While some find it as a natural talent 😂😂, billions canvass for it, so much they go the extreme mile to fall asleep (and many times, the fall ends up hurting).

Having said that, it's noteworthy to point out that in rare medical cases, there exist many sleeping disorders, of which I'd mention a few as outlined by W.H.O

-Insonmia
-Depression
-Weight excess
-Parasonmia
-Seizures
-Cardiovascular changes
-Reduced Immune system
-Accident

Insomnia is the most popular of the sleeping disorders known to humans. This is the reason I will be focusing on "Insonmia" as a sleeping disorder.

Insomnia, what it is.

This is a disorder defined as chronic complaints of unsatisfied sleep, despite having an adequate opportunity to.
This complaint can include difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking up too early, and/or having sleep that is not refreshing.

Note that the inability to fall asleep is very different from not sleeping because of no time to. Insomnia is characterized by ample sleeping time but little or no sleep.

Treatment of Sleep Disorders.

Sleeping pills may be effective at ending your sleep problems short-term.
These pills are not devoid of side effects.
Sleeping pills may cause the following side effects:

-Changes in appetite
-Constipation
-Diarrhea
-Dry mouth and throat
-A headache
-Heartburn
-Dizziness
-Weakness
-Mental slowing or memory
-Stomach pain or tenderness
-Uncontrollable shaking of the body
-Impairment the next day
-Daytime drowsiness
-Difficulty keeping balance
It may cause a more complex side effect like "Parasomnias".
A condition where movements, behaviours, and actions are done without control of the doer.
Sleep behaviours like sleep eating, making phone calls, bedweting, or even having sex while in a state of sleep.

Common ways to treat sleeping disorders

  • Incorporating more vegetables and fish into your diet, and reducing sugar intake.
  • Reducing stress and anxiety by exercising.
  • Creating and sticking to a regular sleeping schedule
  • Drinking less water before bedtime.
  • Limiting your caffeine intake, especially in the late afternoon or evening.
  • Decreasing tobacco and alcohol use.
  • Eating smaller low carbohydrate meals before bedtime.

In conclusion, " Early to to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

hyperactive children suffer from a disorder, do not see sleep as laziness, simply do not have the power to say to stay still. Depression is not a sleep disorder, depression brings with it as a sign or symptom a sleep disorder, but the truth is that not sleeping is the worst thing that could happen to someone, even if it's only for hours
