As we age lots of changes occur within the body and eye is no exception. Some of common things that happen is a decrease in how well we see, that's visual acuity which may be due to age related macula degeneration or cataract development and liquefaction of the jelly like substance in our eye called Vitreous, during the process of liquefaction the vitreous tend to pull on the retina which is the part of eye containing the photoreceptors that enable us to see.
A common symptoms that comes with this liquefaction and pulling is an entoptic phenomenon known as flashes or floaters. Most often individual report of seeing some flashes in their vision as the look at things or some black objects floating through their vision, it is sudden and transient. If you're lucky it could be this liquefaction we are talking about however there's also a serious condition that occur in the eye that presents with these similar symptoms.

This is called Retinal detachment, is a disorder of the eye in which the retina separates from the layer underneath. Symptoms include an increase in the number of floaters, flashes of light, and worsening of the outer part of the visual field. This may be described as a curtain over part of the field of vision. Since the retina can't work properly when this happens, you could have permanent vision loss if you don’t get it treated right away.

Who's at Risk? You're more likely to get one if you:
Are severely nearsighted
Have had an eye injury or cataract surgery
Have a family history of retinal detachment

How Is It Diagnosed?
As part of an eye exam. The doctor will give you eye drops that widen your pupil (she'll call this dilating your eyes). She'll use a special tool to look into it and see if your retina is detached.
Early diagnosis is key to preventing vision loss from a detached retina. Don't Assume it is nothing and that it will pass, it maybe harmless or not, leave the diagnosis to the eye specialist.
