New research says that the people who sleep late are at risk of early death!

According to modern research, the people who sit up late and sleep late, suffer from various health issues and may even die earlier. The modern civilization has forced us to work late and this in turn has caused serious health hazards.

A new research paper published by Northwestern University claims that night owls gradually suffer from different diseases and disorders. These include diabetes, mental illness, gastrointestinal issues, neurological problems and heart diseases.

The research says that the night owls had 10% more increased risk of dying as compared to those people who are early to sleep and early to rise.

“I think it’s really important to get this message out to people who are night owls,” says lead author Kristen Knutson, an associate professor of neurology at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “There may be some compelling consequences associated with these habits, and they might need to be more vigilant in maintaining healthier lifestyle.”

Humans can’t adopt true nocturnal lifestyle like owls, without suffering from serious side effects.

If we mess up with our preferred sleep schedule, it can drastically disrupt our cardiac rhythms and can cause negative effects on our health. We are all feeling these effects. Research says that the modern humans are sleeping little due to effects of artificial lights, warmer temperatures and stress. The scientists are working to understand the effects which it has done on our health.

“We think,” says Knutson, “it is at least partly due to our biological clocks. We think the problem is that the night owls are forced to live in a more ‘lark’ world, where you have to get up early for work and start the day than their internal clocks want to. So it’s a mismatch between the internal clock and the external world, and it’s a problem in the long run.”

Other studies show that being the night owl is not always that bad. Day-dwellers are more focused to achieve goals and are more attentive. But the all-nighters tend to be more creative and open to new experiences.

So if you are a night owl, don’t be too hasty to change yourself immediately. Maybe you should choose a career that empowers your artistic side and let you sleep batter.

In the end, we should take care of ourselves. In today’s society, we are continually working harder for longer hours. But when working to live becomes living to work, it is good to take a step back. At the end of the day, our own well-being should be the most important thing.
