It is recommended that a child should be taken to the dentist for screening or checkup after their first tooth erupts. But we didn't take the kiddo for his first dental appointment until he was two years old. By that time, he already has a full set of teeth; his first cute tooth came out when he was four months old.

He was taught to brush his own teeth and gets a regular in-house teeth and mouth hygiene check by his fastidious father. Nevertheless, it is vital that the kiddo receives professional care every six months.

I went along for his first appointment and the kiddo was dressed casually so that he would not think that going to the dentist was a big deal. I was impressed with the cool decor at the reception area. There were TVs, toys and games to keep young patients happy and occupied while waiting to be called. To avoid unnecessary fear, it is so important to ensure that a child's first dental appointment is a positive experience.

The nurse was talking to the kiddo the whole time from adjusting the reclining chair and checking if he was comfortable. Telling him that she was going to clean his teeth and checking if he has a preference for cherry or apple flavoured toothpaste. Telling him that she was going to turn on the overhead lamp and if he needed dark glasses to protect his eyes! He was able to watch a cartoon on the overhead TV that the nurse has so thoughtfully adjusted for perfect viewing.

The dentist was no exception; just as friendly and patient. He used simple words to explain the procedure and the kiddo was completely relaxed. He left the clinic happy and proud that the dentist has given him the thumbs up.

The kiddo would go into the consultation room by himself for subsequent visits.
