There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that says that colloidal silver is an effective antibiotic. However, there is also a lot of “official” information that contradicts this and says it's not safe or effective. For me evidence comes in the form of physical proof, so I tend to like to hear experiences that back up what is being said and there seems to be more evidence of good experiences than bad, so I felt it worth trying myself.

My Experiences:

My first real test for colloidal silver was when our male quail broke his wing. It was severe enough that the bone had come through the skin and it quickly started to smell necrotic, like an infection had gotten in. Our local vets aren't experienced with birds and have a tendency to just put them to sleep rather than figure out how to help them. So I tried him on colloidal silver. It seemed touch and go for a few days, then I was amazed to see him start to perk up. Within a week he was crowing again and crazy to escape back outside. A couple of weeks later his wing actually came off, so it was worse than I'd originally thought. He spent a little more time inside on the silver again, but only seemed off colour for about a day this time. It healed over nicely and he went on to add another year to his life taking him to 4 years old, which is a good age for a Japanese quail.

Another animal many vets also don't seem to have much experience with is rabbits and after numerous trips there with our mini lop and a gunky eye, we gave up and tried colloidal silver in his water. His eye cleared up within a couple of weeks and he was good for years afterwards. The problem turned out to be connected to his teeth not meeting properly, an inbreeding issue, and this problem has gotten worse with age, bringing the runny eye back. This time it took longer for his eye to get better and at one point I thought he'd be on colloidal silver permanently, but seeing as prescribed antibiotics didn't have any affect, this was our only option left. He is now 7 years old and not as active as he used to be, but going strong otherwise.

I've managed to treat conjunctivitis in rabbits by using colloidal silver both topically and internally and I usually put sick chickens on it with good results

I've used it myself for a tooth infection and it didn't work as quickly as antibiotics typically do (maybe I was being overtly cautious and dosing too low), but so far I've had no recurrence over a year later. So basically I've had various good results using it as an antibiotic.

Claims:

There are claims that colloidal silver is a cure for just about everything, a panacea if you like, which is a bit grandiose. Really it's just antibacterial, so all the anecdotal evidence seems to show it working in cases where bacteria is the cause of the problem. It can help with allergies, but only where they are triggered due to bacteria. There are also claims of it being anti-fungal and anti-parasitic, however I have not found it to be so affective in these areas. Maybe it needs larger doses, something I mutt look into more. I'm am also dubious about it treating cancer. There are various causes of cancer and there is a potential that it could assist the body in healing, but that's a whole other discussion.

Possibly the silver assists our immune system by getting rid of bad bacteria the immune cells would normally be having to deal with and allowing it more strength to deal with other issues better. That's just my ponderings though.

Potential Side Affects:

There is a rare side affect of overdoing colloidal silver and that is called argyria. Basically your skin turns grey and until recently there was no consistent way of reversing this. Rosemary Jacobs’ story is often discounted, but it shouldn't be. What she experienced should be a warning of side affects. She was instructed to take colloidal silver for over a year, despite not feeling she needed to any more. She has had also had cancer, despite having all this silver in her body, negating claims that it can cure cancer.

Paul Karason is also someone mentioned with regards to argyria. However, if you look into his case you'll find that he made his colloidal silver from tap water which causes other chemical compounds to be made. He also drank it several times a day for a years. He didn't care that it turned him grey, because he was just happy that his ailments no longer bother him. I guess he's a good example of why you shouldn't over do things!

It does seem that some people are more susceptible towards getting argyria than others, but any medicinal treatment should be used sensibly and with caution. Antibiotics aren't meant to be taken indefinitely or in large amounts. There are people who end up being prescribed them long term, but that's at a doctor's discretion.

Why I use it:

In a world where antibiotic use has gone a bit crazy and most antibiotics have a lot of bad side affects, I don't feel like argyria is such a terrible risk, especially if used with caution. We are able to make our own, which means costs are much lower than other antibiotics, so this is my go-to for treating my animals. I don't think they would be too upset if their skin turned grey, but it hasn't yet in any of them. I'll let you know if it does!

We don't often use it ourselves as I prefer prevention to cure and try to maintain my family's health with good eating practices. We're already seeing the results of over use of antibiotics anyway with the superbugs that have been occurring.

This is a terrific post MSH - sorry I took so long to get to it. I have resteemed for my easy reference too.

I have known about anti-bacterial properties of silver for a long time, generally due to the stories of our forefathers. Seafairers would place silver coins into the water barrels to keep the water safe for their long journeys. Medical practitioners were known to effectively treat burns and wounds with silver with success.

My question to you however, is this...

Where does one go to get colloidal silver? I could look it up myself - but I am interested in how you acquire it, as when it comes to sustainable living practices and common sense MSH - you are my first point of call.

It would be appreciated if you could do a post on this matter when you find the time.

Be well fair lady.

SirKnight.

No apologies needed SirKnight. They're are so many great articles going up on here that you can't get to them all and it's easy to miss some.

Thank you for a bit of history on silver. I think I may have heard mention of seafarers using it for water, but I didn't know it was used so much by medical practitioners.

You can get colloidal silver from health food shops. It's quite pricey though. It's also expensive to get a proper machine for making it yourself, although I'm sure the quality from said machine is better than what we produce on our homemade one. I will have to get hubby to walk me through how he made our little silver machine.

I'm always a bit cautious when it comes to posting about medical things as I certainly wouldn't want to give bad advice and I feel that all sides of things should be put forward, good and bad, for people to make an informed decision.

Thank you Sir for the compliments. 😊

Thanks for the article. I enjoy silver too. I had great results with itching eyes last spring, allergies or perhaps an infection, I don't know. The first aid gel form is also quite helpful.

I haven't come across the gel form. That sounds like it would be easier to use topically.

Silver is a awesome metal truly defines the word precious metal huh?
It has antibacterial effects on external wounds as well used in bandages.

Who would have thought a metal could do that. In some ways it makes it more precious than gold.

Ive never used it myself, but know of at least one truly miraculous cure that can only be attributed to the use of colloidal silver

A friends 3 year old had no energy or strength, no vitality for over a year. Just sat in the pusher when his mum took him out. Over a year of medical diagnosis and treatment and nothing.

One day we saw them and it was the same. The next day the child was standing beside the pusher and walking and smiling.

The only difference - several doses of commercially made colloidal silver in the previous 24 hours.

To me, thats a miracle.

That is pretty amazing! I don't suppose they ever figured out what the problem was?

I like your post about colloidal silver !
