Why Women Having A Baby After 35 Can Boost Their Brain Power.

in #health7 years ago

Women seem to be constantly warned against the downsides of leaving it too late to have their baby, but there are upsides too - like a boost to their brain power.

Scientists now say there is an upside to delaying motherhood in that it can boost your brain power in later years.

Women who had their last child after 35 were found to have a sharper memory than those who had their children in their early 20s.

It's been suggested that having a child after 35 could protect the brain from memory loss around the time of the menopause.

It's thought that the hormones that flood the body during pregnancy (oestrogen and progesterone) affect the brain's chemistry and help improve overall cognitive function. The later in life a women experiences this, the better the protective effect is in later years.

The US scientists said in a study that pregnancy timing was related to memory. In the trial, 830 menopausal women did a series of cognitive tests by remembering a series of word lists.

Those who had children at age 35 plus were found to have better recall and cognitive function than those women who had their children at age 24. Having two babies after 35 was also found to be better for the brain than having one.

Lead science author Dr Roksana Karim, an assistant professor at the University of Southern California, said 'While it is not enough to suggest that women wait until 35 years of age to close down their family growth, our findings prove a positive effect on a late pregnancy that is both novel and substantial.'

I had 2 of my 3 after age 35. Nice to know that made me more intelligent! They are now ages 12, 8 and 5. Thanks, I had fun reading this article.

Glad to have boosted your intelligence without you even knowing about it :-)

I don't know...LOL I feel as if with each child I LOST brain cells and I was in my 20's! hahaha

Yeah, when I was pregnant I lived in a house where the patio door had been placed upside down by the previous owners and it once took me 10 minutes to open it-I think I even started crying because I was so frustrated.
I like my marbles so still can't figure out why most women do it more that once!

Oh no! LOL I had 3 pregnancies and with all of them I was super sick and super clumsy. I dropped a new jar of mayo and it exploded all over my kitchen leaving shards of glass and mayo everywhere. I distinctly remember bawling my eyes out when I realized nothing in my closet fit me! Shopping for maternity clothes wasn't all that fun for me. While I enjoyed feeling the baby move for the first time, and having all the excitement and bonding with the hubs, I can't really claim to have enjoyed pregnancy.

It was always my overweight friends who didn't mind pregnancy-they didn't miss their mobility or brainpower cos they weren't active anyway and they weren't deep thinkers and they enjoyed moaning about the niggly health issues, like indigestion and high BP cos it made them feel special- whereas I never had any issues apart from the all day-for-12-weeks sickness and a bit of oedema near the end. Whoever termed it "morning" sickness needs to have their head kicked in!

I'm sure many women can share your thoughts!

Works for us. Will send this to my wifie. Cheers!

Frankly, I don't believe this study.

I don't even know how I would run a study that would confirm this.
Just giving an IQ test each year to the women in your study will increase their IQ. So, I can't imagine a test pattern that doesn't effect the results.

There is a very determined, well funded, group that is forcing the whole notion that 30 is the new 20. It is part of a eugenics program. I see their works everywhere, funded through a bunch of front companies (like the Clinton Foundation).

Having seen a litany of such claims as above, I am distrustful of such studies.
I am fairly sure that what they measured is that women who wait till they are older to have children are usually the more intelligent women.

The research was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Ok, yep.

What they found is that women who had children later in life had a better memory and IQ.

Women who had their first baby after the age of 24 were better at problem-solving and reasoning than those who gave birth earlier.

Women who are smarter go to college and basically put off family/mothering for 4+ years.
The other women have children starting almost immediately.

So, when you give IQ type tests to menopausal women and correlate that with when they had their first child/last child, then of course, the ones who had children later have higher IQ abilities.

They never measured the women before. As before and after. They only measured the after... and came up with an explanation. So, a completely bogus study

Still working on the funding organization, but it looks like one of the eugenics organization fronts.

Oh...that explains my problem. I had my first child when I was 21. But I have a high IQ so maybe it's gone down a few points ....I wonder what it was prior? Meditation helps renew the plasticity of the brain .... babies or meditation....I choo chooz .....I forget. :)

Yippee, explanation for my brains!

That seems a common thread here in the comments section today.
