Just thinking about the penguin searching the beach for days and the man isn't there is pretty upsetting. Or eventually old age, perhaps he thinks about the man one last time.. :'(
The worst feeling of isolation and somberness. A reminder of mortality and the temporary nature of everything. Animals evoke an innocence in us which is why we like them as pets. You want the best for the penguin and the man.
Cetaceans, more intelligent mammals like elephants, and birds like penguin have pretty developed parts of the brain responsible for social interaction. This part of the brain is even larger than humans in the case of whales. This is why they always strand themselves on beaches together; not because they're so stupid as to repeatedly do it but because they refuse to leave their pods behind. Pods also have their own form of language. You'll never find two identical sounds being produced in two separate pods.
It's not so much that animals are 'smarter' than we give them credit (that's a very simplistic way of looking at it). Rather, many animals have more social awareness than we give credit for - that is emotions, relationships, and what we'd dub a consciousness. So far, elephants and cetaceans have passed sentience tests.
