Learn how to relax quickly and improve your life

I've been into meditation for quite some time now and I do it every now and then to help me focus, be happy, become more creative and energetic and also, a better person. It works, trust me.

I fact you can benifit from meditation and awareness exercises more than from anything else. And guess what, it cost absolutely nothing. And you can do it everywhere. Everywhere.

This is short guide, will help you fall asleep or relax extremely fast.

It is based on own experiences, yoga teachings, and the famous sleep researcher Christopher Winter.

1. Make yourself comfortable

Find a comfortable chair, or sofa or your bed. Sit back and try to find a position you think you could stay in for hours without moving.

2. Deep breathing

Focus on your breath, it will calm you down. Breath in slowly and deeply for 3-4 seconds and breathe out for a bit longer. Don't rush and do as it feels best for you.

3. Relax your body

Start with your arms, let them fall down, as if they were really heavy. If you sit, you can rest your hands on your lap.
Relax your neck and open your jaws slightly, freeing the tension you normally keep. Let your head fall down towards your chest as you continue breathing regularly. Make sure to relax all the muscles in your body.

4. Get rid off the tension in your face and eyes

Feel your scalp relax, your lips, your cheeks. Unfocus you're eyes, don't look at anything specific. Try to relax the muscles of your eyes and your eyelids, so they're only half way open. If you already closed your eyes, that's fine too, but don't force it, let it happen.

5. Mentally relax, and calm down your thoughts.

This is the hardest part, and you will have to learn it, but you will and it even helps for the first time.

Try to avoid thinking of movements or sports, because it will tense your muscles and wake you up (this has been proven in studies).

Now think of this image, it's a warm summer evening, your lying inside a canoe on quiet lake.
You hear birds and crickets chirping, everything is peaceful and you look up into the beautiful violet sky. You're safe, you can let go of all your thoughts and troubles.

If your thoughts slip, you think of work or errands again, remember, that's okay, but try to come back where you are, on the canoe floating in the lake. You're floating to. If you're not yet asleep, try to repeat Do not think over and over again. That's the only thought allowed. The peaceful black space you're seeing is putting your mind to sleep. If you manage to not think of anything for maybe 20 seconds, you're probably already asleep.

Conclusion

  • This exercise can put you to sleep at night or get you the power nap you need in a stressful afternoon.
  • If you don't want to sleep, these steps will help you relax a lot and regain your energy and focus.
  • You will feel energetic and happier afterwards.
  • Doing this for a couple of minutes, or maybe even 30 seconds, will already have a strong effect.
  • You will get better at this technique with time and can even use it on the subway or in a waiting room.

Please comment if you have any questions, I'm happy if this guide will benefit you.
