P-trap is a plumbing device that traps a small amount of water each time your sink drain, or bathroom drain, or toilet drain, or even washing machine drain, in order to prevent sewer gases escape from the drain system and enter your home.
Any connection that leads to the drain system is also a possible outlet for sewer gases. Essentially all plumbing fixtures including sinks, bathtubs, washing, and toilets must be equipped with either an internal or external trap.
