Excellent well researched post @lymepoet! A friend's father died at the age of 42 after contracting Congo fever from a tick bite, he was a cattle farmer, it was so tragic!
Wow! I heard how devastating Congo fever can be. Usually it's very rare that it happens nowadays. I know there were more cases in the '70s. I think they came up with a vaccine for it and then it was gone. Can't remember properly.
That happened just over 20 years ago, he found a spotted tick on himself and still told his wife this is the type that causes Congo fever! There were reports of some cases back then here in South Africa, have not read about any lately. The sad part was that he was actually getting better but then his lungs collapsed as he was a heavy smoker!
