Alert! Australia's Rockmelons / Cantaloupe Tainted With Deadly Bacteria
Australia’s rockmelons / cantaloupes were contaminated with a deadly bacteria called Listeria. According to The Sydney Morning Herald news on March 6th, 2018, this outbreak has infected 17 people and killed four (4) people in total. This outbreak has affected Sydney, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and Tasmania.
Listeria monocytogenes bacterium is the culprit causing listeriosis, a type of food poisoning currently in outbreak. This type of bacteria is found in nature and can contaminate our food through unclean harvesting or processing. Several labs tested the rockmelons and concluded that the bacteria can be found on the skin, not on the flesh, of rockmelons.
Listeria has an incubation period of three (3) until 70 days. People infected could experienced flu like symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, diarrhea, brain infection, and blood infection. This bacteria could be dangerously deadly for people with weak immune system such as children, elderly, or pregnant women. Early infected people could be cured using antibiotic. Please consult your doctor if you or your loved ones are experiencing the said symptoms.
Including Australia, Health ministry department from many countries have temporarily recalled and banned the imported rockmelons. This includes governments from New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, India, and UAE.
Prevention
If you have concern for the health safety, just throw away your current rockmelons, wash your hands with antibacterial soaps, and wait till this outbreak to pass before consuming another rockmelons.
