Health benefits of ginger

Ginger is the underground rhizome of the ginger plant. The flesh of ginger can be yellow, white or red and it is covered with skin.
Ginger is mostly used as a spice or a folk medicine, and its health benefits are extraordinary.
It was valuable medicine in China and India for thousands of years, and was also priceless during Roman Empire because of its amazing medical properties.



HEALTH BENEFITS


Indigestion and nausea


It doesn't matter if it is simple stomach ache, morning sickness or pregnancy caused nausea- ginger is the solution. It has been used for thousands of years as an digestive aid and natural cure for nausea. Ginger can be used as a remedy for sea sickness and can reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy.


Boosts immunity


Ginger is good for cleaning the lymphatic system, and by keeping those lymphatic channels clean, ginger prevents accumulation of toxins in your organs. Ginger has also been found to enhance the protective functions of the immune system.
Three years ago, I had serious problem with lymphatic system, I was in really bad shape, and just after two days of consuming ginger I was back and healthier than ever.


Diabetes


Ginger may drastically lower blood sugars. Some preliminary studies indicate that ginger may have some benefits for people with diabetes, especially in protecting of diabetic complications such as diabetic retinopathy.

However, ginger is not a replacement for medical therapy.


Infections


Gingerol, substance in fresh ginger, can help lower the risk of infections. Ginger is very effective against bacteria that are connected with gums infections, for example gingivitis and periodontitis. Fresh ginger is also good for prevention of respiratory infections.


Anti-inflammatory effects


Osteoarthritis is common health problem and it includes degeneration of joints followed by joint pain.
Ginger is reported to be good as a pain reducer in cases of osteoarthritis.


Muscle pain and soreness


Ginger is very effective against exercise induced pain in muscles. Again, gingerol acts on certain receptors, which are located on sensory nerve endings. It is worth of mentioning that ginger doesn't have instant effect on pain reduction, but it is good for day-to-day reducing of muscle pain.


Cholesterol

High levels of LDL lipoproteins, so called ''bad cholesterol'' is main cause of heart related diseases.  A 45-day study of 85 individuals with high cholesterol, 3 grams of ginger powder caused significant reductions in most cholesterol markers .

Cancer prevention

Ginger contains substance that may prevent cancer. Experiments with mice discovered that gingerol-6, substance that can be found in raw ginger, delayed growth of cancer cells. There are some indications that raw ginger is especially good in preventing breast cancer and pancreatic cancer, but this, surely, has to be studied a lot more before conclusions are made. 

Alzheimer prevention

Ginger may improve brain functions. Study of 60 middle-aged women was using ginger extract and has shown certain improvements in memory and reaction time. 

Studies in animals show that ginger is good in protecting age-related decline in brain function.

How to prepare ginger

Ginger can be consumed in different ways. You can eat it raw, or you can use ginger essential oil, which is the most potent way of using ginger, because of the high level of gingerol. You can even make ginger tea, and this liquid form of ginger is used for curing nausea. You can even use ginger powder, as a cooking spice.

Ginger beer

The drink originates in the 18th century in England, and was first known as a fermented alcoholic beverage made from sugar, ginger and water. But today commercial ginger beer is a soft drink and contains no alcohol (although a few brands do).
