HOW TO MAKE HIBISCUS TEA FROM SCRATCH - NO TEABAG!!! - WHAT THE BENEFITS ARE

in #health8 years ago (edited)

Enjoyed as a tea here in Egypt, I set out to find some dried flowers to make my own tea.  We are fortunate to have lots of different spices and herb markets in Cairo so it wasn't long before I found what I was looking for.

What looks like 'pot-pourrie' is in fact the dried hibiscus flower. These petals and stems are loaded with fruit acids and amino acids, vitamin C, anti-oxidents and a minerals all going towards boosting your immune system, lowering your cholestrol  and keeping a healthy heart - A total body work out! Super Tea!

Having a strong immune system will not only keep you  from falling  sick more often but also enable your body to fight various diseases  like swelling and arthritis. This is probably the most important health  benefit obtained from drinking hibiscus tea.

Additionally regular drinking Hibiscus tea, hot or cold can go a long way to cleaning your liver enabling it to function better giving you better health, as well as aiding your digestive system and relieving any heartburn and stomach upset,  caused by a blocked or  sluggish bowel, should be relieved in time through drinking  hibiscus tea.

HOW TO MAKE:

Ingredients

2 cups dried hibiscus flowers, rinsed

8 cups water, divided

3/4 cup sugar or honey if preferred

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOT DRINK

In a large saucepan on high heat, bring hibiscus flowers, all the cups of  water, and sugar to a boil.

Cover and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes.

Remove from heat and allow to cool

Using a colander/strainer, strain out the hibiscus flowers.

Pour into glass and enjoy.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COLD

Follow as above but use only 4 cups to boil the flowers

When cool - add the remaining 4 cups and stir.

Pour over ice and add spring of mint and ENJOY :)

* vary the sugar/honey if you prefer it tangy or sweeter

This looks like a lovely alternative to Turkish coffee!

it is and quiet tangy as I dont use a lot of sugar personally, I used honey - really enjoying it:)- may even be nice with a shisha !!

I wondered how much honey you had to add. I need to add it to all these types of tea. Sweet @mindhunter tooth :)

I usually add 1 tablespoon ful - but if you have a sweet tooth may be 2 tablespoons. This tea is with 1 tablespoon was tangy, but I like that . Not sure where you are, but you may find dried Hibiscus in a health food store or specialist Asian market?-taste sooooooo much better that a teabag !

Most Asians are fleeing Scotland after Brexit, thus leading to a national hibiscus tea shortage! GRRRR! Oh well, I'll stick to the Irn Bru for now ;)

Ah no you've got Buckies ( Buckfast)- hahaha
Use to live near Buckfast Abbey and went regular to get this wonderful tonic good for the soul!

Hibiscus tea is so tasty! Great post, following.

Thank you @sharingeverybite- this was my first attemp making it from scratch- it was really tangy which I liked as I used honey - tasted so much better than the tea-bag version. Got some left over to try as a cold drink tomorrow. Thanks for commenting, appreciated :)
