There is always more...

more we can do to make our lives easier, more healthful and enjoyable, so that we may share that with others.

One such thing to share, we saw in the postures of sleep Described in this post:

We saw that how we sleep can indicate the persona we have as well as the benefit or hardship we bring on to ourselves.

Dive deeper into...

Your sleeping position, as it is vitally important to understand for your mental and physical well-being. There is so much more to consider to gain in the quality of sleep instead of simply its duration. As it is your restorative, healing, mentally and spiritually cleansing time given us each day, we must strive to make it the best we can.

A healthier way

Research has shown that to gain maximum benefit for quality sleep and healing, sleep on their left side. This is not new research, it is ancient Ayurvedic health restoration method.

The very meaning of the term Ayurvedic is; "the science of life"), an original holistic approach to life... and health.

The benefits begin by enhancing your digestion, releasing strain on the spine and therefore the nerves that innervate internal organs and fatigued muscles strained throughout our waking hours. Additionally it is a key to reducing the heartburn many suffer from, due other sleep postures.

Let's take a closer look at the health benefits of sleeping on your left side:

Rids toxins & waste

Ayurvedics hold that sleeping on your left side strengthens the lymphatic system. This allows the body optimal filtering of lymphatic fluid and waste through the lymph nodes. This occurs due to the left body being the dominant lymphatic side.

Even new research has found that by sleeping on your left side the body can clear waste chemicals from the brain far more efficiently. By sleeping on your right you can also decrease the lymphatic system efficiency.

Improved circulation

Again in conjunction with improved lymphatic efficiency, gravity facilitates greater lymph circulation to and from the heart... improving the hearts overall circulation as well.

Reduction in heartburn

According to studies in Clinical Gastroenterology, lying on the left side reduced acid reflux symptoms and by lying on the right side it increased the symptoms.

If you suffer from heartburn lying down for 10 minutes on your left side may alleviate the symptoms.

Improved digestion

Again gravity improves digestion as lying on your left side allows the food waste to move more easily from the large intestine into the colon. This also tends to initiate bowel movements upon waking.

The left side sleeping position also allows the stomach and pancreas to hang naturally, in the body cavity. As both organs are predominantly located on your left side, they can channel the gastric juices more easily and efficiently. It also promotes secretions of pancreatic enzymes which enables digestion to work steadily as opposed to all at once, as occurs when by sleeping on the right side of your body.

Alleviate back pain

By sleeping on the left side, they individual removes pressure on the spine. This position diminishes the pain of the strain on the spinal nerves and muscles, relaxing the back naturally.

Benefits for pregnant women

In addition to increased blood circulation and less pressure in the spine, sleeping on the left side can also help the uterus from squeezing the liver. It also serves to increase blood flow to and from the uterus, fetus and kidneys.

Who does not benefit

People with heart issues, sleep apnea, glaucoma or carpal tunnel syndrome, may not benefit from sleeping on their left side and may want to consult with a medical professional.

Making the switch

If this isn't a position you are used to sleeping in, it will naturally take some time adjustments and time. So here are some suggestions to make the transition easier:

  • Maybe try a body pillow behind your back to prevent rolling off your left side while sleeping.

  • Or you could possibly try sleeping on the opposite side of the bed than you normally do so your orientation is more normal.

  • If sleeping on your side adds too much pressure on your hips and shoulders, opt for a softer mattress.

Sleep well

Your health depends on it and by using a combination of a comfortable bed and a healthy sleeping position will increase your overall wellness and life.

I always sleep on my sides, but I honestly couldn't sleep on one side all night! I switch from left to right to left, etc.

I don't know what side I use as I am sleeping.

I will be sleeping on my left side tonight for sure :)

Maybe not for everyone, but there is compelling reasons to do so!

Thank you... a. It early in the morning, I should still be in my left side!

I'm always sleeping on my left side!!!
