Drastic Rise

In Orthopedic Surgeries

.

In knee replacements alone since 2000, the annual rate of that surgery this procedure has more than doubled in the United States alone. With more than 640,000 surgeries now performed each year, it brings a cost of more than $10 billion into the Health Care world.

But then consider ACL's and LCL's and rotator cuffs, Oh My! Yes people have changed, from hard working professions of farmers, builders and fishers to slothen desk jockey's... with obesity issues. Then it changed, people are now exercising and playing sports so hard to flip that past dynamic, that they are injuring themselves in escalating incident and far beyond the manual labor days!

Rise in Womens Procedures

.

Men have always dominated the need for orthopedic surgery... mainly due to repetitive work processes and sports related injuries with long term wear (repetitive stress injuries). However surgeries and replacements are also on the rise with women as they work out and train harder and harder under misguided advice of many a "Health Guru".

Youth Injuries

.

Even more drastic is the rise in children's injuries... yes they are now rushed from sport to sport, with parents and coaches trying to force them all into the professional mode, they are pushed harder, faster and some even more ruthless in execution of what used to be a fun activity.

We see not only joint injuries, but also head injuries, when will parents wake up, this is not the only way to get the kid in college!

Folks this is something they will live with the rest of their lives... we are all against child abuse... well this sure as hell qualifies.

Where is the Balance?

This is an opinion piece as much as real factual statistic... but I have lived it personally as well as seen and dealt with it for 40+ years. We all need to smarten up in what we do and how we do it... especially with our youth.

As a physical trainer, therapist and advocate... I would like to share my opinion for what ever it may be in worth to you. "High intensity repetitive training is a must for professional athletes as they get paid for injuring themselves, but the rest of us should think about training for longevity and quality of life... we don't get paid enough to ruin our bodies".

everyone should stay indoors....and only watch TV or the computer.

Nah, maybe just use their head more.

We all gotta do more YOGA!!! Its good for everything!

Yoga (done sensibly) is a good answer... the better one is to play the game or activity with the proper mindset of health and growth as opposed to reckless endangerment. For the Children this is the parents responsibility to look after.

I think they are both good answers :)

Training harder and harder is a necessity in sports be it in man or women division. Nothing is gonna change that. You are right with the kids. They shouldn’t be taken as professionals by the coaches and be forced to overburden their buddies until like +- 15 years old. One of our best players was 16 last season and I really didn’t see anything wrong with him taking it super serious. He wasn’t forced, it was his decision. We all CHOOSE to train harder and harder, because we have to, if we want to stand a chance against the best worlds team in next year’s World Club Championships.

Yes and therefore maybe they should all be coached on the repercussions. People typically do not think far ahead of possible injuries and burden in their life they are creating in the now.

This is a piece to report a drastic rise in sport related injuries... I was one of those irresponsible... or shall I say uninformed coaches until it caught up with me personally.

People need to fully understand what is fun today can affect them tomorrow, most do not. World Cup is fine... but is it worth the pain, discomfort and limitations later in life... that is the question for each individual this post brings up.

We all know the risks. As I said that is sport. Our bodies are slightly damaged even now. We don’t have coaches, we all do our own research and we are in it together. We fully understand that we will be slightly crippled in one way or another. Be it inability to bend a finger, or permanent pain in the knee during rainy seasons…that’s just the way it is. We are in it for the love of the sport. That is something of much higher value than love of our decomposing bodies. All I can hope for is that I will avoid bad injuries. I got fucked up finger and I tore my triceps last season…that’s next to nothing imo.

Yes each must decide where their line is... God Bless, Good Luck and Enjoy.
