Diabetes is a condition wherein the body could no longer produce insulin or it could no longer utilize insulin properly. The insulin helps the body in utilizing the sugar (glucose) as energy. If a person with diabetes, their body could not use the sugar and it stays in the blood. This will result to the increase of blood sugar.

Monitor the level of blood sugar


Diabetics should monitor the level of their blood sugar at home to help them understand how to stop and diabetes through proper exercise and healthy food. It is important to know the level of blood sugar to avoid too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia) level of blood sugar. By knowing the level of blood sugar, it is then easy to establish a plan for remedy. The measuring of blood sugar at home could not be use as replacement to the examination that were taken one in every 3 months.

Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia


Hypoglycemia means very low level of blood sugar. Among the indications of too low level of blood sugar are the following;

  • Shudder
  • Dizziness
  • Hunger

  • Irritable
  • Anxiety
  • Blurred vision

If the level of your sugar in the blood is 70 and below, then you should follow the rule 15:15, consume 15 grams of carbohydrates and wait for 15 minutes and measure the level of blood sugar. Do this again, until your blood sugar exceeds 80. The 15 grams of carbohydrates can be found in a half glass of extract fruit juice or the usual softdrinks, 3 tablet of glucose, or a cup of non-fat milk cow.

Hyperglycemia on the other hand, means that blood sugar is at high level. Among the indications of hyperglycemia are the following;

  • Frequent urinating
  • Extreme thirst
  • Sleepy
  • Headaches
  • Hunger

Hyperglycemia is due to too much eating of food, not enough insulin or other medicine for diabetes, sickness, too much thinking or worry (stress). If the high level of blood sugar had been the same for the past few days, you should consult a doctor.

Sickness, too much thinking and stress


Sickness can be due to the abnormal increase and decrease on the level of blood sugar. If you have sickness, it is important to check your the level of your blood sugar very often and consult a doctor. If you are vomiting and continue to loss appetite, it is important to inform your physician as soon as possible. Don't stop the diabetes medication without the consent of the doctor.

Too much thinking and anxiety could also result to increase the level of blood sugar. This could be due to problems arising in the family, work, problem with money, sorrow, death of a love one, divorce and other problem that can cause huge changes in life. Healthy eating and exercise could help alleviates too much thinking and anxiety.

Depression or too much sorrow is more usual to diabetic person. This could be normal part of life but if this continue, and will become a hindrance in our fellowship with family, work and friends, I think its time to seek for assistance.

Life of a Diabetic: Food & Physical Activity


Health food, exercise, and proper weight is important to to control diabetes. Maintaining proper weight and healthy food can help in controlling cholesterol and in lowering pressure.

Food for Health

The following are the important guidelines for healthy food;

  • Each different kind of food coming from different food group every day to make sure that your body is receiving vitamins and minerals needed for health.
  • Eat food of not less than 3 times a day.
  • Eat the same amount of food every day.
  • Eat at the same time every day.
  • Don't skip hunger. Skipping hunger could result to too much eating. Skipping hunger could also lower the level of blood sugar.
  • If you want to loss weight, lessen the volume or part of the food.
  • Consume high fiber food such as fruits, vegetables and beans.
  • Lessen the usage of fat, sugar and salt in the food.
