Hello dear fellow Steemians!

Trauma of the anterior teeth - the danger lurks everywhere. A individually mouthguard is the answer.👍🏻

Not all teeth get destroyed by caries. Depending on the selected study about 10 - 30 % of the worlds population suffer a dental trauma during their lifetime. Regarding children and teenager the percentage goes up to 35. A dental trauma of the primary teeth can result in a damage of the permanent teeth. Children with exposed upper anterior teeth and a receding lower jaw are more likely to suffer a dental trauma.
The estimated yearly costs for accidents regarding the teeth in Germany are around 200 to 550 million EUR, which is about 235 to 587 million US Dollar. The number of accidents is rising every year.

What can I do in case of a dental trauma?

  • Your tooth is broken
    • In case a fragment of your tooth is knocked out, try to collect the piece
    • In some cases and depending on the size, the piece can be reattached again
    • Try to visit a dental office as soon as possible
  • Tooth knocked out
    • In case your tooth is completely knocked out, go and search the missing tooth
    • If you find it, try to pick it up and hold it by the crown and NOT the root
    • Rise in cold water but don't lose it in the sink
  • Now you have 2 options:
    • (1) Put the tooth back in its place. Be careful and gentle. Try to help others if you are nearby. Don't put milk teeth (primary teeth) back in place!
    • (2) Otherwise store the tooth in a cup of milk or saline water. If you don't have one of the two in place, just place the tooth in the mouth between the cheeks and the gum. Many schools and sport facilities have special boxes for knocked out teeth. It's filled with a mixture of fluids and medicine to protect the tooth. Save a tooth box.
    • Search for the next dental office in under 2 hours!

To protect yourself or your children from any kind of dental trauma, please use a mouthguard. The original post was written in German. In Germany not as many people use mouthguards as in US. While playing contact sports most atheletes are forced to wear a mouthguard in the US. Studies show that since establishing these rules, the number of injuries dropped signifacantly. There are different kind of mouthguards. Most of the time a individually fitted mouthguard which is worn by many amature and professional atheletes protects the teeth better and is more comfortable to wear. Of course it's more expensive but the advantages are huge!

In our dental office we provide you with many different individually produced mouthguards. You can choose the color or even a logo and the mouthguard varies regarding your favorite sport. You can even wear it while having a fixed braces.

To finish off this article I inserted a short video. It sums up different ways to open a wine bottle. But what has this to do with teeth? Two to three times a month I have patients who come into the office with broken anterior teeth. Most of them broke them by biting on a pen or fork, opening a bottle or box, or while playing with their children or cats and dogs. Please be careful and protect your teeth! Thank you 😀
