On human Development; the theories involved part3

Today, another theory of human development will be addressed and this one is coming from the famous SIGMUND FREUD (1856-1939). He calls it; FREUD’S STAGES OF PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT. Just like other theories, this theory also follows the line that it ends in either successful completion or unsuccessful. Quickly let’s run down this stages

ORAL STAGE
Birth-18 months. The child’s greatest pleasure is derived from sucking. If not weaned properly from this act. The child grows up manifesting behaviours like; over eating, over drinking, biting the nails, and even over dependent on others. In an attempt to fight this urge, they may become aggressive to others.

ANAL STAGE
From 18months-3years, the next point of call for the child is the ability to retain and eliminate faeces. The child is forced by parents and society to control this stimulation. Success in this stage will lead to an obsession for neatness, perfection and control while the failure in this stage will lead to a messy and disorganised personality.

PHALLIC STAGE
3-6years; according to Freud, he believed at this is the point where the male child starts getting sexually attracted to the mother and sees the father as a rival…. weird right?? Although he sees the dad as rival, he is scared that the dad is aware of his feeling therefore forms a bond with his dad which build his manly character. This feeling is called “Oedipus complex” …. I guess this is the reason why male children grow up to be attached to their mom more than their dad.

Freud did not say anything concerning the female child but recent research has shown that female kids also have the same experience towards their father. A failure in this stage will lead to a confused sexuality.

LATENCY STAGE
6-puberty; The sexual urge is repressed and children play with same sex peers

GENITAL STAGE
From puberty on, the urges of sexual advancement are awakened once again and this time, the urges are directed to the opposite sex with the major pleasure being the genitals
