Health Tips #8 Do Not Drink Alcohol While Taking These Medications!

We Are Back with our new post in The "Health Tips" series.

Have You Ever consumed alcohol while having following medications???.... If you have then you already know what it feels like . and if you have not yet, you should not do it in the future!
- Metronidazole- Also Known As 'Metron' , this is widely used for Diarrhoea, dysentery, oral infections and other anaerobic infection
- Cloramphenicol - wide spectrum antibiotic, used in typhoid, meningitis, and other infections
- Isoniazid- antitubercular drug
- Cefoperazone - cephalosporin group, used in various infection
- Sulfamethoxazole - sulphonamide group of drug, used along with trimethoprim for respiratory tract infections
- Nitrofurantoin - used in urinary tract infection
- Anticoagulant drugs- Warfarin
- Painkillers- Phenacetin, phenylbutazone
- Antidiabetic drugs- chlorpropamide
- Nitroglycerin
But why You should not do it???

When we consume alcohol it is absorbed through stomach and small intestine and enters bloodstream. Then it reaches liver where it is metabolised by alcohol dehydrogenase to acetaldehyde and then by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase to acetate, then it is excreted from the body and effect of alcohol fade away.
But the drugs listed above inhibit the enzyme Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase which results in accumulation of acetaldehyde which is more toxic than alcohol itself. It elicits a adverse drug reaction known as "Disulfuram like Reaction".
Features of Disulfuram like reaction-
- Nausea and vomiting
- Unbearable headache
- Breathing difficulty
- Flushing
- Visual disturbances
- Hypotension
- In severe cases the person my Collapse
