Biological Half Life in Nutrition

in #health6 years ago

Half life is used in physics to determine how fast will the given amount of radioactive element reduces into a half. In biology, we speak about the time, when the body metabolizes the substance and removes it from the body. Seeing some examples will convince you to avoid consuming them in food.

  • Mercury - 65 days
    • Sea food including fish, which is collected near the areas of the high polution are great source of this dangerous metal.
  • Lead - 1 month in blood, 10 years in bones
    • When you overdose yourself with lead, it starts to get stored in the bones. Has similar sources to mercury and fillings are often made of lead. A lot of lead leaks from them. Another source are cosmetic products especially lipsticks. It gives the metallic shine. Look forward to my future articles to see, which brands are the worst (from health perspective).
  • Cadmium - 30 years found in seafood.
  • Pennicilium - 30 minutes to 56 hours. It is one of antibiotics.
  • Arsenic - 3 to 5 days, found in rice.
  • DDT - 6 to 10 years.

Which Seafood Is Safe

Generally speaking, wild-caught small fishes are very safe. Farmed and bigger kinds are worse as they either feed on food made by humans, and therefore containing pesticides and such, or they are big enough to accumulate the waste in their body and in worst, they feed on other fishes, which do have some toxins accumulated.

Why I Mentioned DDT?

Even though, this herbicide has been banned for some time, it somehow persists in soil and can still be found in human bodies. Other pesticides have also a long half-life in our bodies and it is better to start buying BIO before they cause any damage.
