EFT: Emotional Freedom Technique - What is it and how to do it.

What is EFT? EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique and involves the neutralisation of negative emotions obtained by some occurrence in the past. These negative emotions are connected to memories in the brain from the past.

The method that is used is a combination of tapping on certain chakra points combined with addressing the negative emotion or feeling.

Your subconscious mind is taking lessons from these bad memories and whenever a situation is created that is invoking the same negative emotion in a situation similar to the bad memory, you brain goes in fight or flight mode. For your own protection.

A phobia for instance is a negative perceived character trade for the person in question but it is a positive lifesaving reaction from the subconscious mind.

So what EFT does is going back to that memory to experience the emotion and collecting the information out of the brain.

By tapping on the energy points serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABBA) are released in the brain which makes it impossible for the negative emotion to be stored back with the memory and therefore the negative emotion that previously was attached to the memory is gone.

How it is done.

First we go back to a bad memory and we try to experience the emotion as high as possible.
Rate the intensity of the emotion with a number between 0 and 10, where 10 is the most intensity.

Note: a memory can also be in the future: like stress before a speech or test for instance.

The set up:

Below on the picture you see point 12 that we call the karate chop point. Start Slowing tapping this point with your fingers. At the same time say the following phrase ( fill in your emotion/problem)

‘’ Even though I feel like (emotion) caused by (memory), I deeply and completely love, accept and forgive myself.”

Do this 3 times.

After we have done this setup we can start with our round of tapping.
Note instead of point 12 you can also lightly rub the sore spot as an alternative to use in the setup..

Now we start lightly tapping on the top of your head 7 and 8 times while saying: This (emotion)
After 7 times we move to point 1 : saying This (emotion)
we do that for all the points , then we breath in deeply and release.

Now go back to the memory and emotion and see how it feels this time?

Rate it again and do one round of tapping again. (You can skip the setup).
Continue with this until the intension of your memory is at 0 or near 0.
