I would argue he was smart enough to get support
So in a way he is still self made.
On a site note : at the moment it is better to go 50/50 since steem dolllar get you more steem power as far as I know.

when you post your content there is an option down right how you like to recieve your rewards. you can choose 50/50 and 100% steempower.
There were a couple of threads floating around that you get more steempower with the steem dollar.
At least I think this still the case.
