Why I Stopped Drinking Soda

in #health7 years ago

So recently I decided to quit drinking soda cold turkey after learning more about the negative health effects. I then did some more research on how soda effects health and I was surprised to learn that soda even affects organs like the kidneys and mineral levels! Here are a few surprising facts about soda that I bet you didn't know about:

-Increases diabetes risk:
Consuming high levels of sugar places strain on the pancreas, leaving it unable to keep up with the body's need for insulin. Drinking 1 or 2 sodas a day can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes by 25%!

-Caramel coloring in soda is linked to cancer and vascular issues:
The artificial brown coloring is not natural caramelized sugar, but instead a chemical process. It is made by reacting sugars with ammonia and sulfates under high pressure and temperatures. These chemical reactions result in the formation of 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) and 4 methylimidazole (4-MI), which in government-conducted studies caused lung, liver, or thyroid cancer or leukemia in laboratory mice and rats.

-High in calories

-Acid in soda wears down dental enamel (something your body doesn't make more of).

-Depletes your mineral levels:
soda contains phosphoric acid which removes calcium from your bones.

-Can change your metabolism (for the worse)

-Diet sodas contain mold inhibitors:
They go by the names sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate, and they’re used in nearly all diet sodas. “These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it – they knock it out altogether,” Peter Piper, a professor of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Sheffield in the U.K., told a British newspaper. The preservative has also been linked to hives, asthma, and other allergic conditions, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

-Side note:
I had a really bad craving for a coke today but didn't give in! Researching this has solidified my decision to stop drinking soda all together. Hopefully this is some food for thought for you all :)

good decision. I am lucky enough to just dont like it, except once or twice a month mixed with alcohol, but trying to get rid of that also.

You will be better off!

All that soda stuff should come with health warnings and would if we could get rid of government. It's government that stops the reporting of contents including GMO ingredients on all that we eat. You know you live in an insane world when we make furniture polish out of Lemons and Lemonade (soda) out of chemicals.

It is quite scary!

Congrats! for your new healthy version. Healthy body Happy mind!

A very wise decision I believe.

I stopped eating sugar altogether a few years ago and feel much better and 15 pounds lighter.

I drank a sprite with my dinner for over 20 years and find myself still craving one after 5 years without it.
Hang in there, life is much better toxin free!

Wow thats insane self discipline! Good for you!

Yeah. Bad stuff!
I haven't quit but I sure have reduced my intake of soda!

love tea! :)

Hello fitgirl I think as with most things in life moderation is the key .
followed you

Agreed :) thanks for the follow!

That was one of the best decisions I ever made. I feel so much more full of energy and get sick less often. Now I make my own soda with soda water and fresh fruit juice!

Thats awesome! :)

Congrats on your decision. If it makes you happy and feel better, that's all that counts.

As always, there are two sides to every story. Here is a lady that is 104. She credits her longevity to 3 Dr Peppers a day. All the doctors who didn't drink Dr. Pepper tried to tell her it was no good. Good thing she didn't listen because she outlived all those quacks.

I am another great case. I myself have not drank water in 40 years, I only drink Dr. Pepper. I drink 2 liters everyday. I'm almost 60 and my doctor says I'm very fit. Keep doing what I'm doing.

BTW, according to this study, you are 10x more likely to die of lung cancer than liver cancer you spoke of. Should we all stop breathing too?

no we should not stop breathing. Maybe not smoke cigarettes would help prevent lung cancer (so ive heard) Some people are just lucky with their genetics as this woman seems to be. I can assure you, dr. Pepper is not the key to a long life. Never know when it'll catch up to you.

That study didn't say how many of those deaths by lung cancer are from smokers. Many people get lung cancer from second hand smoke, pollution in the air, toxic fumes from buses and cars in crowded cities.

It just seems like nowadays everything we do is bad for us. Even the healthy food has pesticides. Fish have mercury. Animals eating weird stuff. Nothing is safe.

Good luck with your anti-soda. I hope you live a long and prosperous life.

Ehhhh..some things are safer than others. Not saying you are guaranteed to get cancer and die from drinking soda. Just putting out the proven studies of its effects. My personal reason for stopping soda is to not get fat from all the sugar.

But thanks for the well wishes. Appreciate it. 👍

Your soda drinking seems to have taken a toll on your teeth.
