Circuit Training; The 6 minutes cardio training for really busy people.
CIRCUIT TRAINING VERSUS FULL WORKOUT
Cardio-vascular exercises commonly called "cardio" include jogging, swimming, cycling, speed-walking, skipping, burpees etc, these exercises are designed to strengthen the heart and the cardio-respiratory system and keep our physical performance at peak level. Full cardio workout can be time consuming and exhausting for busy people but here is where circuit training come in. Because I often work with people who do not have a lot of time but intend to keep fit, there is a need to offer them a system that requires less time but delivers as much result and circuit training has always been a preferred option. It is simply a series of exercises combined in short sequence and spaced with a few seconds of rest with the whole training usually lasting between 5 to 10 minutes. Its well recommended because it allows the busy person (you) to achieve much in little time provided you can dedicate a few minutes daily.
Each type of exercise included in the circuit is called a "station" and a circuit can have as little as 3 stations or as much as 15 stations. (An average of 6 stations is recommended for non-athletes).
Find a good example here, (assuming you opt for a circuit training session with 6 stations);
Station | Exercise | Time |
---|---|---|
Station 1 | High Knees | 20 seconds |
25 seconds rest. | ||
Station 2 | Jumping Jacks | 20 seconds |
25 seconds rest. | ||
Station 3 | Mountain Climbers | 20 seconds |
25 seconds rest. | ||
Station 4 | Skipping on a Spot (No ropes needed) | 20 seconds |
25 seconds rest. | ||
Station 5 | Chinese Jumps | 20 seconds |
25 seconds rest. | ||
Station 6 | Burpees | 20 seconds |
These exercises can be randomly selected but must be timed accordingly. Consistency in practice will also pay off in the long run.
BENEFITS OF CARDIO WORKOUT
In my opinion, increased cardiovascular endurance is one of the most important benefits of cardio and circuit training can also help you achieve this in your little spare time. Cardiovascular endurance is simply the ability of your cardio-system (heart, lungs and blood vessels) to supply fuel (most importantly oxygen) to your muscle tissues properly during sustained physical exercise. This gives you the ability to engage in challenging and stressful activities without burning out immediately, it simply increases your endurance during everyday activities.
Beside this, cardiovascular exercises are also known to increase blood flow within the body and brain and thus improve every aspect of mental and physical health. It also improves lungs capacity and physical energy among many other benefits.
If you always find yourself without much time to exercise but you wish to, you can easily make today a great day to start, it will only take you lesser than 6 minutes.
