How to make your own 100% natural sunblock

Have you ever wondered what's in that nice-smelling lotion that we all slap on everytime we go to the beach? Have you ever questioned whether it's actually good for you or the environment? If you haven't, I've done the job for you =).

Most sunscreens and lotions are actually filled with harmful chemicals, which will not only jeopardize your own health (think cancer, which is what you are actually trying to avoid!), but also pollute the ocean and everything inside of it (more details here: http://www.marinesafe.org/blog/2016/03/18/sunscreen-pollution/).

Oxybenzone is one of those toxic chemicals to avoid, so always check your ingredient list. I was quite shocked that even more expensive brands like Neutrogena had Oxybenzone in them.

The pollution of oceans by sunscreens, also called "swimmer pollution", is considerable and is responsible for the destruction of reef and coral around the world. Oxybenzone also threatens fish and any other mammals that come in contact with it.
And even if you do have a waterproof version, it will still eventually end up in the ocean, at the very latest when you shower to wash it off.

Moreover, buying sunscreen when you live in a tropical country (I live in Panama) can become quite expensive, as you will use it a LOT. You can of course buy natural sunscreen lotions, but it will cost you.

So here's an easy recipe to make your own 100% natural sunscreen for very little money with ingredients that you probably already possess. I've added some citronella essential oil to mine, in order to repel mosquitoes and give it a nice smell at the same time:

NB: I bought my beeswax and zinc oxide powder on Amazon, but you can find them in stores as well.

I realized that it's quite waterproof too, so no need to put on a ton of lotion every 10 minutes! I just apply it once, and I'm good to go for my entire beach session.

Now go make your own sunscreen, it takes 15 minutes total to make it and you won't regret it. Enjoy!
