In today's world and very unfortunately at that, people seem to be only concerned about the more publicized STDs – HIV/AIDS, Genital Herpes, Gonorrhoea, Genital warts, Syphilis, etc – and aren’t even aware of a number of STDs and/or STIs they may currently be living with, posing a serious risk to their health.

This is because, some STDs are asymptomatic and many sexually active individuals are unaware that they have become infected. That is why routine testing is so important. If you know your status, you can seek treatment and/or become cured as well as take the necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the infection. On the other hand, remaining undiagnosed allows these infections to proliferate among your sexual network(s), and this may eliminate viable treatment options, and result in disease progression which can cause other serious illnesses.

In order to mitigate this scourge in our society, below is my short list of generally ignored STDs:

#Lymphogranuloma venereum: also known as LGV, Lymphogranuloma venereum is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection of the lymphatic system. It is caused by 3 different types (Serovars) of bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. The infection is not caused by the same bacteria that cause genital chlamydia. And it is more common in men.

Symptoms include blood in the stools, genital sores or ulcers, swelling of lymph glands in the genital area and tenesmus - painful bowel movement.

LGV can be treated with antibiotics like erythromycin. And proper use of condom can be adopted as a prevention measure.

#Trichomoniasis: also known as trich, Trichomoniasis is a very common STD that is usually difficult to feel or detect as it's mostly asymptomatic. It affects more women than men. Trich is caused by a parasitic microbe known as Trichomonas vaginalis. It is passed between penis and vagina. And can also occur in lesbians.

In women, infection occurs in the vulva, vagina, cervix or rarely urethra, while it occurs in urethra and less commonly in the prostrate in men.

Symptoms in men include irritation when urinating or ejaculating. In women, symptoms include smelly yellow-green discharge, itching and discomfort when urinating or having sex.

Treatment is done with an oral antiprotozoal antibiotics like metronidazole or tinidazole.

3)#Moluscum contagiosum: this is a skin infection by a virus known as Molluscum contagiosum virus, which cause lesion on skin surface.

Molluscum contagiosum is spread by direct contact with the lesion of an infected person or by contact with a contaminated object, such as a towel or a piece of clothing. In teens and adults, however, infections are on usually by sexual contact.

The condition is usually asymptomatic but can be very significant in immuno compromised individuals.

There are a wide range of treatment options including cryotherpy, curettage, and laser therapy. Doctors may also prescribe imiquimod, podophyllotoxin, trichloroacetic acid and cantharidin.

In CONCLUSION, it is important to pay attention to the symptoms of these generally ignored STDs and also be very mindful of STDs generally, more especially Chlamydia and gonorrheae to ensure early treatment and avoid complications. If STDs are left untreated, it can result in PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE, which is a precursor to permanent infertility.
